Job Description
The Environmental Services Officer I is responsible for the effective operations of conducting animal, litter, rabies, and vector control activities.
Essential Functions:
- Cleans, feeds, and cares for the animals housed in the shelter.
- Sets animal traps, picks up animals, performs animal cruelty investigations, and investigates litter complaints.
- Issues animal and litter related citations to offenders and prosecutes these cases in court.
- Receives incoming calls from the general public concerning complaints and requests.
- Responds to and investigates assigned animal, litter, and vector related calls.
- Inputs detailed documentation on a number of forms and reports such as, but not limited to, daily activity logs, database forms, monthly reports of activities, dispatcher logs, cash deposit forms, work order forms, citation database.
- Makes appearances in Court to prosecute served tickets/citations.
- Must be able to assist with and perform humane animal euthanasia when needed.
- Assists DHEC with animal bites and quarantine bite animals per DHEC regulations.
- Makes Court appearances at Magistrate Court to prosecute served ticket/citations.
- Works on-Call on a rotational basis on weekends and after-hours, which includes cleaning, feeding and medicating animals at the shelter.
- Transports animals to rescue organizations and veterinarian offices.
- Transports inmates to work area, and supervises the inmate litter removal program.
- Operates a variety of equipment such as vehicle, spray equipment, radio, copier, computer, camera, stun gun, control poles, trap equipment, lawn mower, weedeater, etc.
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, inmates, County management staff and employees, County Council, vendors, S.C. DHEC, Magistrate’s Office, law enforcement/emergency response, medical facilities, hospitals, attorneys and the general public.
Non-Essential Functions:
- Attends trainings to stay current on regulations.
- Instructs the public on the importance of rabies vaccination.
- Performs all other related duties as required.
Qualifications: Education and Work Experience
- Must be 21 years of age.
- Requires a high school diploma, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Must obtain state certification as a Limited Duty Class 3 Basic Officer within four months of hire.
- Limited Duty Class 3 Advanced Officer certification preferred.
- Must obtain a Category 8-Public Health Pest Control pesticide applicator license withine one year of hire.
- Must obtain a SCACCA Humane Euthanasia Certification within six months of hire.
- Valid Driver’s License.

- Must be able to reach, bend, stoop, carry, move and lift 60 lb. objects regularly.
- Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- The employee must have the ability to travel up to 5%.
