About the Job
Come join the Environmental Service Section (ESS) of the Solid Waste Division! We are currently seeking qualified candidates to fill an Environmental Specialist I position.
This position will assist the ESS workgroup in a variety of tasks throughout the Snohomish County solid waste system including:
- Environmental monitoring, inspection, and maintenance of landfill gas and flaring facilities;
- Monitoring of leachate collection and treatment/conveyance systems; and
- Surface water and groundwater quality monitoring at all SWD facilities.
Qualified applicants will be required to pass a:
- Written exam: Qualified applicants will be emailed instructions to schedule an in-person written exam.
- Interview: After passing the written exam you will be emailed instructions to schedule an in-person interview.

About the Solid Waste Division
The Solid Waste division oversees the disposal of garbage, hazardous materials, and recycling throughout Snohomish County. With three full-service facilities and an additional four neighborhood and special items facilities, the division is focused on:
- Reducing overall waste from Snohomish County
- Promoting and emphasizing the reuse of items and recycling
- Handling household hazardous waste
- Providing garbage and recycling facilities for county residents
- Transferring garbage to the landfill or partnering with private vendors to handle recycled items

Snohomish County Public Works is responsible for more than 1,650 miles of county roads, 201 bridges, and 202 traffic control signals, as well as processing nearly 600,000 tons of garbage per year. Teleworking Options
The work associated with this position is considered primarily in the office. The possibility of hybrid remote work and in-office work options will be evaluated and implemented as needed and assigned by the supervisor.
Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a home workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. Snohomish County has a robust collection of tools and resources to support working remotely. A Snohomish County Telework agreement is required for employees assigned to telework.
Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their Snohomish County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
