JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, assumes most of the daily processing and
operational tasks of the Hazardous Waste Collection Facility (HWCF).
Facilitates the Electronic Waste (E-Waste) Program and the Recycled Latex
Paint Program. Assumes management responsibility for the HWCF and assigned
staff when the Hazardous Materials Manager (HMM) and the Environmental
Specialist III (ESIII) are absent. Assorted duties include collecting,
handling, processing, segregating, and packaging hazardous waste
materials received from the public and small VSQGs; lifting, weighing,
packaging e-waste received at the HWC Facility; loading properly packaged
and labeled hazardous materials and electronic waste; loading properly
packaged and labeled hazardous materials and electronic waste onto trucks for
transportation to offsite disposal/recycling facilities; interacting with
the general public while collecting household hazardous waste, performing
cashier duties, answering the telephone, and checking and returning
messages as necessary. Provide assistance to the HMM and the ESIII with other
related hazardous waste issues.
The ideal candidate is self-motivated, has the ability to prioritize
duties, has the endurance to keep up with physically demanding activities,
is enthusiastic about environmental health and responsible waste management,
takes pride in serving the community, and will represent our company with
professionalism and respect.
This is a full-time, hourly position: 40 hours per week, five days per
week (Tuesday-Saturday) with varying work hours from 6-9 hour shifts.
Professional development training and special events may require irregular
hour
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Provide frontline customer service at the HWCF; including providing
information to the public regarding proper waste disposal, answering
customer questions related to policies and regulations of the Solid Waste
Division, setting disposal appointments for VSQGs, and answering and
returning telephone calls,
Provide information to the public regarding electronic waste disposal
options, policies, and procedures of the company Solid Waste Campus.
Screens and accepts appropriate hazardous wastes received for disposal at the
HWCF.
Screen and collect electronic waste from our company residents and businesses.
Other duties include weighing the electronic waste and working as a cashier
when receiving payment from a program participant.
Safely segregate and/or consolidate hazardous materials based on chemical
compatibility for storage, disposal, and recycling under the supervision
of the HMM/ESIII.
Bulks latex paint, oil-based paint, and flammable liquids manually into
55-gallon drums.
Oral and written communications must be clear and effective.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES:

Ability to prioritize and transition from task to task fluidly in a fast-paced

Recommended:
Experience handling monetary transactions and accurately settling cash drawer.
Experience safely operating small equipment vehicles such as a forklift and
UTV.
Experience with industrial processing machinery and equipment.
Laboratory experience including following scient fic procedures and "bench
chemistry" testing.
Comprehension of the proper handling of chemicals and spills according to
relevant regulations.
