Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Sunnyvale is seeking a Unit Secretary to provide indirect patient care in the Emergency Department setting. Meets the communication needs of the patient/family, departmental staff and medical staff. Prepares and compiles records in the Emergency Department. Initiates directions from physician and nursing staff. Participates in performance improvement activities. Maintains regulatory agency requirements, nursing and hospital policies and procedures and standards. Clients served are predominately adults and geriatrics, but adolescents/pediatrics and neonate/infants will occasionally be treated.
What your day will look like:
- Verifies and enters patient charges daily.
- Communicates with House Supervisor needs for inpatient beds.
- Completes Physician notification log of patients being sent to the Department and notifies appropriate personnel if receiving information.
- Maintains ED files of appropriate downtime documentation.
- Prepares and prints patients files in conjunction with progress notes for Consulting Physicians
- Audits Medical records on all patients admitted, discharged or transferred.
- Assists with MOT completion and receiving facility contacts
- Enters and verifies orders in the computer system.
- Enter patient demographics into MedHost.
- Communicates appropriately and clearly to charge nurse, co-workers and physicians. Assists in preceptor ship of new employees.
- Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
- Treats patients and families with respect and dignity.
- Interacts professionally with patient/family and provides explanations and verbal reassurance as necessary.
- Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
- At shift change reports professionally and accurately to oncoming unit secretary
- Documentation meets current standards and policies.
- Answers telephone/intercom in a polite manner and communicates information to the appropriate personnel/family.
- Place telephone calls upon request to physicians and logs the times in the MedHost system.
- Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly. Notifies Director of supplies needed.
Success Factors:
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Current BLS certification.
- Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.
- Additional languages preferred.
- Basic computer knowledge.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
