Position Description
Excavation Foreman
T. S. Garnett Construction, Inc. is a mid-sized excavating contractor located in Hamilton, Ohio whose work consists of subdivision development and the installation and repair of commercial and residential underground utilities including water, sewer, septic systems, gas, electric, storm sewer. Other work includes construction and repair of ponds, excavation for foundations, basements and driveways, land clearing and grading, emergency repairs of water and fire service lines, among other things.
T.S. Garnett Construction, Inc. is seeking an Excavation Foreman to perform and direct work.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Excavation Foremen is a working foreman who will be responsible for leading a crew to
install, maintain and/or repair underground utilities, or perform other work as required. The
ideal candidate must have a valid Ohio CDL license with a trailer endorsement, and
demonstrated experience operating various types of heavy equipment including bulldozers,
backhoes, track hoes, loaders, mini-excavators, skid-steers, single and tandem-axel dump
trucks, etc. as well as knowledge of utility installation regulations and requirements.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Must possess leadership skills necessary to oversee crew(s) on jobsites to successfully
and efficiently complete work while fostering a positive work environment; and
• Possess excellent mechanical and problem-solving skills and be able to perform pre-trip
inspections and request repairs and adjustments to equipment as may be necessary.
• Must be able to obtain all training and/or certifications as required by owner, and to
provide training to crews as is appropriate (safety awareness training, tool box talks,
etc.).
• Must be able to operate heavy equipment including bulldozers, backhoes, track hoes,
loaders, mini-excavators, skid-steers, single and tandem-axel dump trucks, etc. and to
transport these pieces of equipment; and
• Hand dig with shovels, picks, digging bars to expose located utilities, and work around
existing utilities with care.
• Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds, bend, twist, work on a ladder, climb in and out of
equipment, walk considerable distances and perform all physical tasks that may be
required during the entire assigned work shift; and
• Install water pipe, sewer pipe, storm sewer, septic systems, gas lines and electric
conduit and make appropriate connections with existing systems; and
• Perform backfilling, grading, breaking concrete or rock using appropriate equipment,
cut, fill, perform erosion control, grade and/or reclamation.
• Able to assess material needs and place orders for upcoming work to minimize off-
equipment time.
• Schedule OUPS dig tickets and utility inspections as are required for each job; and
• Fully restore worksite at completion of work, refill trenches and holes, tamp soil, replant
any plants or shrubs that were disturbed during construction.
• Clean and maintain all company vehicles and equipment assigned for use.
• Must be capable of and willing to work in all temperatures and climates.
• Other duties may be assigned consistent with job description.
REQUIREMENTS
• Previous experience and knowledge of underground utility construction a must. Five (5)
years of experience operating heavy equipment is desired.
• Ability to operate all equipment safely and productively
• Knowledge and understanding of reading drawings and ability to follow specifications
• Ability to use GPS and GPS-enabled equipment
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact with crew,
leadership, and clients
• Ability to accurately document job specifics (time, materials, equipment) and work with
office personnel to ensure timely transfer of information
• Valid Ohio CDL Driver’s License with trailer endorsement
• Function effectively as an integral part of a team
• Must be able to meet physical demands of the position
• Work safely in all conditions
• Possess knowledge of Industry standard safe working practices
• Must have reliable transportation, valid Ohio CDL driver’s license with trailer
endorsement, and clean driving record.
• Must be available to travel to various sites within a 50-mile radius
• Must be able to work weekends and evenings when needed

time off, paid holiday leave, health insurance and performance bonuses. Successful
candidate can expect to start at a pay rate of $30/hour or more commensurate with
experience.
