Mathematica's Health Unit seeks an Executive Director for our Health Research, Strategy, and Analytics (RSA) Practice, an important market within the Health Unit providing deep subject matter and data expertise in a wide variety of policy areas (including public health, behavioral health, and maternal health) paired with strong capabilities in research, analytics, and technical solutions. Key clients include a wide array of U.S. HHS policy agencies (including but not limited to AHRQ, ASPE, CDC, HRSA, NIH, and SAMHSA) and domestic health foundations. The Executive Director for RSA will oversee all components of the business, with an expectation of substantial growth in RSA’s client areas and a particular focus on building technical analytic solutions while maintaining our excellent reputation for top-notch research and policy analysis. The Executive Director for RSA reports to the Senior Vice President for the Health Policy Assessment division.
Mathematica’s current RSA practice comprises more than 75 professionals. These staff bring a wide array of policy, subject matter, and data expertise, and represent a variety of disciplines including health services research, epidemiology, biostatistics, economics, sociology, and clinical backgrounds, among others.
The Executive Director for RSA should have substantial policy experience, deep knowledge of and experience with RSA clients, business strategy experience, strong analytics background, and an understanding of evolving needs as clients pursue data modernization. The executive should have a track record and demonstrated ability to build business and lead groups of professionals in a dynamic environment to meet changing client needs. Mathematica is seeking someone who can evolve and substantially expand the RSA business while maintaining our reputation for excellent project delivery and quality. The ideal candidate will provide strong strategic direction and operational oversight to help Mathematica win and execute complex, high-profile analytics, policy analysis, and research projects. In addition, the Executive Director must possess a comfort level operating with other executives in the healthcare policy environment to externally represent Mathematica.
Mathematica is seeking a proven leader who can:
- Continue to advance Mathematica’s strong reputation and build its burgeoning analytic solutions practice in public health, population health, behavioral health, and other areas of focus for HHS policy agencies and U.S. health foundations.
- Manage a 75+ person practice, determining business development strategy and priorities, staffing needs, and investment areas; be accountable for the quality of the work of the practice and the RSA client experience.
- Expand Mathematica’s ability to provide analytics services and solutions as RSA clients evolve their data and technology capabilities.
- Manage practice and division level budgets, project revenue, and set targets for growth.
- Bring a solution-minded skillset to operations of a highly diverse practice.
- Integrate the emerging trends and policy approaches to health, healthcare, and behavioral and public health.
- Provide or coordinate thought leadership on issues critical to RSA clients.
Position Requirements:
- 15+ years relevant health sector work experience, with strong preference given to successfully leading work with a variety of RSA clients.
- MPH, MBA, or other graduate degree in a relevant area of study is required.
- Experience within a policy/consulting/professional services firm and a successful track record building business with health policy agencies.
- Visionary, strategic leader with strong understanding of U.S. health policy and operations, and broader health policy trends.
- Experience and demonstrated success in the Federal business development, including the proposal process, positioning for proposals, leading processes, developing budgets, and partnering with other organizations.
- Collaborative approach and ability to lead in highly matrixed environment.
- Demonstrated leadership, decision making, and strategy development skills.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate concisely and clearly with individuals and groups; strong interpersonal and relationship management skills.
- Experience delivering high-quality work and providing exceptional value to HHS policy clients and health foundations.
- Demonstrated abilities in data analysis, analytic thinking, and technology innovation.

This position offers an annual base salary range of $190,000 - $230,000 annually. This position is eligible for an annual bonus based on individual and company performance.
