Job Summary:
The Extension Program Assistant position is needed to aid the Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) Unit in the care and management of Extension's beef cattle and other animals. The Program Assistant will assist the Animal Science Extension Specialist in preparation and program delivery to farmers/ranchers, Extension County Agents, and Program Assistants, the College of Agriculture, Family Sciences and Technology researchers, FVSU farm staff and students as needed in the development of improved production techniques for farmers/ranchers. He/she will apply a wide range of concepts, practices, and procedures including animal care, and handling, feeding, Artificial Insemination (A.I.), production data collection, inventory management, workshops, and trainings. This position is ideal for someone who is motivated, able to prioritize work assignments as received, and capable of working as part of a team without close supervision.
Qualifications:
Minimum:
- A Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in animal or veterinary science, agriculture or other related field
- At least 1 year of experience with livestock (including cattle) management/handling in an educational setting (i.e. University or School grades 6-12)
- Experience with/ability to operate farm and lawn equipment (tractors, skid steer) and implements safely
- Experience maintaining fences and animal housing
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Friendly and professional demeanor
- Exceptional communication skills
Preferred:
- Extension or other outreach/training experiences (organizing workshops, events, demonstration projects, applied research, etc.)
- Coordination of work in a farming or cattle enterprise or activity
- Experience helping to plan, schedule, and conduct projects/programs (i.e. workshops, training events, field days)
Working Conditions:
- Overnight travel for training or programming may be required
- Working outdoors with animals is required.
- Work hours can be uneven and seasonally long; work can be hazardous due to the operation of farm equipment, handling of large, possibly excitable animals, and chemical handling; individual should be able to work in a variety of weather conditions.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work in all weather conditions as the majority of the work is outside
- Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. regularly
- Stand, walk, squat, and/or kneel for long periods; ability to climb up and down steps into and out of farm equipment (i.e. tractors, skid steer) regularly
Direct Reports:
Extension Animal Science Specialist or as assigned.
