FACILITIES MAINTENANCE WORKER I
Under general direction, performs maintenance and related construction and repair of District pools, buildings and facilities in assigned locations. Performs technical and skilled duties in the operation, cleaning, minor repairing and mechanical maintenance of aquatic equipment, pools, pump rooms, splash pads, and associated facilities and areas.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Troubleshoots minor maintenance problems involving electrical, structural, plumbing, and equipment repair or replacement.
Maintains and repairs District facilities, equipment and buildings.
Diagnoses and repairs electrical problems. Repairs, installs and replaces lighting and light components, switches, controls.
Performs aquatic facility maintenance including operations of pools, pump rooms, splash pads, and associated facilities.
Performs skilled manual labor work in aquatic system maintenance, repair, chemical management, custodial and other duties as assigned.
Paints using proper preparation methods for paints, lacquers and varnishes.
Repairs, installs and replaces toilets, urinals, sinks, water heaters, drinking fountains and roofing.
Installs, maintains and repairs carpeting, floor tile, linoleum, wood floors and other surfaces.
Assists in the planning and coordination of maintenance operations.
Assists with routine inspection of aquatic equipment and execution of required maintenance repairs.
Assists with troubleshooting aquatic systems.
Assists with the assessment of facilities and equipment to identify conditions and take action to ensure safety.
Ordering and tracking of aquatic facility chemicals and monitoring water chemistry.
Maintains inventory of restroom, janitorial and other equipment and supplies.
Oversee the work of outside contractors to ensure District standards are met.
Maintains records and makes reports on the maintenance of facilities.
Responsible for the issuance, care and maintenance of recreation supplies and equipment.
Inspects and ensures the safety of facilities and apparatus.
Directs and conducts regular surveillance of the interior and exterior of the facilities to provide for the safety and security of the facility and its users. Communicates with the private security as it relates to events.
Formulates and follows facility use and maintenance schedule of equipment and machinery.
Operates a variety of hand and power tools and equipment used in maintaining and cleaning buildings and aquatic facilities.
Leads and assists with the maintenance of the parking lot and landscape areas adjacent to the facility.
Leads and assists with general cleaning and maintenance including sweeping; mopping; waxing; dusting and polishing woodwork, fixtures, equipment and floors; cleaning carpets; emptying waste baskets, trash containers and recycling.
Assists in the maintenance of building floors, walls, doors and lighting.
Assists in the setup, production and clean up of special events.
Greets public, answers telephones, and provides information to public or directs them to proper office.
Performs heavy physical labor, lift, carry, push and pull heavy objects, such as tables, chairs and floor machine, (up to 50 lbs.) Walk, stand, stoop and crouch for long periods; climb ladders.
Performs operation of motor vehicles and/or power equipment with intermittent vibration.
Performs under various weather conditions.
Complies with Southgate Recreation & Park District Occupational Injury & Illness Prevention Program. Reports safety and sanitary hazards to the Recreation Manager. Ensures safety precautions are followed and facilities are in safe working order.
Follows oral and written instructions.
Prepares and maintains written records and reports.
Works harmoniously and cooperatively with fellow employees and the public.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge of and Skilled in: Methods, techniques, materials and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of District pools, facilities, buildings and grounds and in the functioning of those facilities; specifically skilled in the care and use of institutional maintenance and cleaning equipment and materials; principles and practices of record keeping; common safety practices and procedures. Effective oral and written communication skills.
Ability to: Follow oral and written instructions and schedules; read, write and speak the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; work harmoniously and cooperatively with fellow employees and the public; maintain neat and appropriate appearance; effectively communicate orally and in writing; analyze situations and adopt effective course of action; demonstrate sound judgment; effectively use personal computers including word processing and spreadsheets. Follow safety procedures and identify potential safety hazards. Maintain consistent use of a vehicle for travel to various locations every day.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to perform heavy physical labor, lift, carry, push and pull heavy objects such as tables, chairs and floor machine, (up to 50 lbs.); walk, stand, stoop and crouch for long periods; climb ladders; basic swimming skills to work on pool deck. Operation of motor vehicles and/or power equipment with intermittent vibration. Performs under various weather conditions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Must be at least 18 years old. Completion of high school or equivalent is required. Two years of full-time paid experience performing aquatic, general building, grounds maintenance and repair work that can be directly related to the requirements listed above for knowledge and abilities is required.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES
Valid California Driver’s License. Insurable under District policy. Certified Pool Operator (CPO) and/or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) are highly desirable.
COMPENSATION
Starting salary is $3,749.16 - $4,785.00 per month. Benefits include personal time off, holidays, health, dental, and life insurance, wellness program, social security and retirement programs.
STATUS Full-time; Non-Exempt.
