Position Overview:
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Fiber Design Engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate will have experience in the design and planning of fiber optic networks, including the creation of detailed network layouts, documentation, and support for field operations. This role requires a deep understanding of fiber optic technology, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with various teams. This is a full-time, primarily remote opportunity.
What you will do:
- Design and plan fiber optic networks, including backbone, distribution, and last-mile connections.
- Create and maintain detailed design documentation, including network layouts, splice diagrams, and route maps.
- Conduct site surveys and assessments to determine optimal network routes and placements.
- Collaborate with project managers, field engineers, and contractors to ensure accurate implementation of designs.
- Perform thorough reviews of submitted designs from contracting groups.
- Utilize GIS and CAD software to develop, draft, and refine network designs.
- Create detailed redline updates to existing designs and diagrams in a fast-paced environment.
- Create detailed fiber construction drawings, including BOMs and SS for various OSP architectures including MDUs.
- Perform feasibility studies and cost analysis to support network design decisions.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, local regulations, and company guidelines in all designs.
- Provide technical support and guidance during the construction and deployment phases of the project.
- Review and approve as-built documentation to ensure the accuracy of the final network.
- Stay up to date with the latest advancements in fiber optic technology and industry best practices.
- Travel to our various job sites across Northern Ohio, Central Ohio, and Pennsylvania a few times a month.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related field.
- 2+ years of experience in fiber optic network design or a related role.
- Ability to travel a few times a month.
- Proficiency in GIS, ArcGIS, CAD, and other design software tools.
- Strong understanding of fiber optic technology, including splicing, testing, troubleshooting, and various FTTx architectures.
- Experience with Outside Plant (OSP) architectures consisting of underground, aerial, and building applications including MDU design and construction.
- Proficiency in MS Office tools such as Excel.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Knowledge of relevant industry standards (e.g., ITU, IEEE) and local regulations.
- Strong organizational and planning skills.
- Ability to adjust to rapidly changing priorities and work within critical deadlines.
- Able to travel to our Ohio or Texas office for business planning meetings.
- Professional Engineer (PE) certification is preferred but not required
- Experience with fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network design is preferred but not required.
- Familiarity with fiber management systems and databases is preferred but not required.
