About the Job
The Financial Counselor will work directly with Premier Community HealthCare Group’s patients on the registration process including financial assistance, insurance eligibility and collections. Will collaborate with the Billing Department to ensure patient questions and concerns are attended to in a timely manner.
Care Team Members serving in this role will make a direct impact on patient satisfaction and billing practices allowing for increase collections and accurate financial assistance documentation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Reviews all incoming patients without insurance to determine Financial Assistance status.
- Screens & assists patients for the financial assistance program including collecting income verification.
- Outreach to patients with information on the Financial Assistance Program.
- Review, collect and set up payment plans for patients with self-due balances.
- Assist those patients that refuse to pay with setting up payment plans.
- Work assigned Epic WorkQueue.
- Assist as time permits with verification of insurance eligibility for scheduled appointments, contacting patients, obtaining authorizations, and get information prepared for check-in.
- Provide a smooth handoff to the Billing Department for all billing related questions, issues, and concerns.
- Provide subject matter expertise and training to front office staff when processing walk-in patients and day of appointments.
- Escalate patient complaints, process issues and complicated registration and billing concerns to the Supervisor or Manager as appropriate.
- Answer multiple phone lines in a prompt, courteous, and helpful manner. Assist callers with non-clinical issues, appointment scheduling, and general site information and direct calls appropriately.
- Assist other care team members as needed and foster a positive work environment.
- Ensure confidentiality and HIPAA compliance at all times.
- Keep other care team members informed when situations occur that disrupts timely patient flow through site.
- Contribute to community give back initiatives and be an advocate for Premier’s mission
- Adhere to patient care needs and the core values of Premier Community HealthCare to a provide best-in-class patient experience
- Work towards attaining department goals and drive Quality Improvement / Quality Assurance (QI/QA)

Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Associate’s degree strongly preferred
- Demonstrated experience with money collection, insurance, bills/ denials, or related position. Prefer two (2) years’ experience in financial counseling, medical billing, or working in a front office role in an outpatient clinic, health care or hospital setting.
- Certified Application Counselor certification through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) or ability to achieve certification within 90 days of hire.
- Basic understanding of medical terminology and documentation.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
- Ability to use basic mathematical skills.
- Able to perform repetitive tasks.
- Obtain and maintain Epic certification/ annual compliance throughout employment
