About the Job
The City of Clayton is accepting applications for the Firefighter/Paramedic position. Those currently in paramedic school with an anticipated 12/31/24 completion date accepted. The purpose of the Firefighter/Paramedic position is to respond to fire alarms, medical and all other emergency calls, save and protect life and property; combat, extinguish and prevent fires and treat people in need of medical assistance.
The Clayton Fire Department is staffed by 42 professional, highly trained employees. Uniformed employees are trained in both fire and emergency medical services. Personnel from the rank of Firefighter through Captain are represented by the International Association of Firefighters Local 2665. The Department offers no cost, public education programs to residents and businesses in Clayton and works closely with the Clayton School District to offer injury prevention programs in the schools.
The Department serves more than 43 high-rise buildings in addition to several which are currently under construction. The department responds to over 2,000 calls annually and provides services from one fire station with full Fire, EMS (ALS), Fire Prevention and Special Operations Teams. Clayton has been a leader in developing high-rise fire safety and building codes and maintains a rating from the Insurance Service Organization ISO of 2. This rating places our department in the top ten percent (10%) of all departments in the country.
We offer a competitive salary range from $73,569 to $93,292 that allows Firefighters/Paramedics to reach the top of the scale within just 8 years.
We will also consider candidates without St. Louis County professional firefighter certification with the starting salary of $67,072 and the expectation to successfully graduate from the St. Louis County Fire Academy by January 1, 2025.
Employee Compensation & Benefits include:

Minimum Qualifications of the Firefighter/Paramedic:
- Must be 21 year or older prior to start date.
- Must be a US citizen or equivalent.
- High school education or equivalent.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state of residence driver's license.
- Must possess a valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) certificate prior to Conditional Offer of Employment.
- Must be able to pass medical exam
- Must possess and maintain, as a condition of continued employment, a valid Missouri EMT-P license or its accepted equivalency upon hire.
- Must maintain an appropriate level of mental and physical fitness to safely perform all assigned functions.

For those selected to advance, the tentative schedule for the selection process is as follows:
Testing - No later than October 16th: Written testing must be completed no later than 10/16/2024. The City has recently partnered with the National Testing Network for written testing of qualified applicants by invitation only. Human Resources will review applications as they are received and contact candidates to confirm details and/or request missing application materials. Following HR's review of application materials, qualified candidates will receive invitation to test via email. Candidates are strongly encouraged to submit their application and copies of supporting documents early so as to ensure they have greater availability for testing dates.
