Job DescriptionJOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for oversight of all first and second assist activity for Shore Health System employees. Collaborates with the surgeon and other members of the health care team to provide educational opportunities for staff functioning in this capacity. Works to maximize the potential of the first and second assist while conforming to the guidelines established by AORN and NBSTSA (professional organizations for operating room nurses and surgical technologists) and SHS Policy. Functions under the direct supervision of the attending surgeon.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
- Responsible for all aspects of first and second assist program development and maintenance, including updates regarding Evidence Based Practice (EBP) and policy revision.
- Coordinates regular ongoing observation of staff to enhance performance. Participates in development planning with individuals involved in the program, maintains education/competency files and communicates regularly with nurse manager regarding staff performance.
- Collaborates with the surgeons to provide necessary educational opportunities while working to optimize staff contribution within scope of practice.
- Builds collaborative relationships with physicians, physician extenders, clinical educators and nursing staff with the goal of enhancing the team’s response to patient need.
- Participates in policy development for the surgical environment and responsible for all updates related to first and second assist functioning.
- Serves as a resource to nursing staff in the surgical/ambulatory setting.
- Participates in unit-based council or mentors designee.
- Fosters a positive working relationship between CFA and RNFA staff.
- Facilities education and establishment of long-term goals for staff functioning in the assist role.
- Maintains certification and assumes responsibility for own professional development as needed as a CRNFA.
- Strives to achieve excellence of service as described in the CARE Manual.
- Responds to the following Shore Health System codes: Code Red (in the immediate area), Code Pink (when called), and Code D (when called).

- Performs related duties as assigned
BSN, Completion of accredited RNFA course/internship that meets the criteria established by AORN for RN First assistant programs. Minimum of 2 years of diversified OR experience. Current CNOR certification and CRNFA.
