JOB SUMMARY
The Fitness Room Manager, under the direction and supervision of the Doig Health Club & Spa Manager (Health Club Manager), maintains records of equipment maintenance and service, ensures Fitness Assistants and Personal Trainers maintain proper trainings and certifications, and supports the Health Club Manager with developing staff programs and schedules to assist members in achieving their wellness goals.
Starting pay rate is $18.00/hr. and is commensurate with experience.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Directly supervises Fitness Assistants and Personal Trainers; maintains records of staff trainings/certifications
- Leads scheduled Fitness Assistant meetings that address the functionality of fitness room equipment, updates on special assistance clients, concerns of staff, and anything related to cardio-fitness room activity
- Participates in the hiring of Fitness Assistants and Personal Trainers
- Implements a process of assigning members to Special Assistance and Personal Training appointments by providing consistent communication on what is available and best for each member of the Health Club
- Completes Annual Performance Evaluations and Stay Interviews for Fitness Assistants and Personal Trainer employees; maintains and negotiates contracts with Independent Contractor Personal Trainers
- Serves as a liaison for personal training services; schedules and assigns clients to personal trainers based on clients' needs and trainer's area of expertise and availability
- Maintains accurate records of equipment maintenance, ensuring a clean and safe environment
- Consults with the Director of Wellness and the Health Club Manager to establish maintenance contracts for fitness room services, including annual inspection of equipment
- Provides input on equipment updates, future purchases, and requests for equipment by employees, personal trainers, or members of the Health Club & Spa
- Assists in developing staff and program schedules to include special events; promotes the Healthy Balance Program by providing information to employees, monthly promotions, bi-annual updates of incentives, etc.
- Reviews health/medical history with member and discusses any noted restrictions or limitations from physicians; assists members in developing attainable goals; makes appropriate recommendations for exercise and when appropriate, conveys information about other programs or special events available at the Health Club & Spa
- Determines and administers appropriate fitness tests; reviews fitness test results and provides meaningful feedback; recommends and updates testing protocols with the approval of the Health Club Manager
- Conducts personalized fitness orientations; performs orientation of cardiovascular and strength training equipment; instructs members about appropriate safety concerns
- Performs frequent visual and auditory inspections of equipment to ensure cleanliness and proper function
- Maintains inventory of Health Club supplies and communicates with Office Coordinator to place orders for more supplies when needed
- Develops, monitors and updates members' continual fitness program and wellness goals/needs and facilitates services and/or programs to meet those goals/needs
- Provides one-on-one assistance to members as part of the Special Assistance program
- Supervises member and guest usage of cardio/fitness area continuously by walking through the area and being available
- Instructs Group Exercise classes and helps with the promotion of Group Exercise in order to maintain or improve class attendance
- Organizes or leads informational sessions, seminars, and presentations as requested by the Health Club Manager
- Develops relationships with members; answers questions and helps resolve member problems and conflicts; provides exceptional customer service and informs Health Club Manager of problems and concerns
- Monitors members' health needs and safety issues in the Health Club & Spa; provides appropriate member updates to staff; ensures members and guests follow posted rules and policies
- Follows established policies and procedures for Incident Reporting
- Attends and fully participates in assigned committee meetings as well as other meetings as required/requested; represents Williamsburg Landing and its Wellness Department on community and state committees as deemed appropriate in consultation with supervisor
- Evaluates work processes and methods and submits recommendations for continuous quality improvement
- Performs other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree in related field required; Two (2) or more years of related work experience in physical education, health science, kinesiology, or related field; Two (2) or more years of management or supervisor experience preferred; Experience as a Group Fitness Instructor and/or Personal Trainer preferred; experience with medical model wellness programs and/or with older adults; ability to obtain related professional fitness certification(s); current CPR/AED and First Aid training certification; valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver's license
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
General knowledge of wellness/fitness needs of senior adults and of program design and testing; ability to develop exercise programs to meet individual needs and limitations; ability to safely provide physical assistance to persons in distress which may include providing CPR, AED, First Aid, or rescue from near-drowning; skills in regular maintenance and repair of exercise equipment; communicating with contractors for repair or vendors for replacement of equipment; general knowledge of physical limitations of older adults preferred; ability to exercise sound judgment in stressful situations
