Pay Rate: $26.15 to $28.50 per hour based on current ASE Certifications held
Plus, up to $0.60 per hour additional for specific ASE Certifications
Note: ASE Certification is NOT a requirement of employment
Shifts are determined based on union seniority; evening and weekend work is likely.

JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES:
Under general supervision, performs skilled and semi-skilled maintenance and repair of light and heavy transit equipment. Assists other Maintenance Technicians as requested or directed.
JOB DUTIES:
- Verbally and/or in writing communicates with all team members and supervisors on a daily basis to ensure maximum coordination of work efforts.
- Under general supervision, performs routine maintenance and repair of all systems and components (excluding major diesel engine repair, gasoline engine tune-up, electronic fuel injection, and Allison Transmission repair).
- Assists in rebuilding (including painting as required) all vehicles and accessories including fare meters, upholstered interiors, seats, glass installation, electronics, hydraulics, electrical systems, air conditioning systems, transmissions, and engines.
- Plans and organizes daily maintenance activities in conjunction with other maintenance team members and supervision.
- Examines equipment in the field as well as in the shop and makes temporary or emergency field repairs as may be required.
- Assists in the preparation of specifications for vehicles and machines used in their repair and maintenance.
- Prepares and maintains work orders, parts requisitions, and man-hour reports.
- Reads, understands, and uses shop manuals, CD-ROM based diagnostic applications, diagrams, and electrical schematics.
- Utilizes tools and machines to diagnose and repair all vehicle defects. Troubleshoots systems to diagnose problem areas.
- Utilizes care in handling occupational hazards and chemicals used in the trade.
- Inspect mechanical work performed by others to assist in diagnosis and repairs.
- Retrieve and/or enter, analyze and/or use maintenance data from an automated Maintenance Management Information System.
- Performs major diesel engine repair, gasoline engine tune up, electronic fuel injection, and Allison Transmission repair.
- Works cooperatively with Parts and Stores personnel to retrieve, return, utilize, order, and otherwise maintain adequate stocks of parts and supplies.
- Responsible for cleanliness and safety of work area.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Graduation from high school or G.E.D. and two years' experience in the repair of motor coaches or automotive equipment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the knowledge, skill and ability may be considered. Some specialized training in various disciplines such as hydraulics, electronics, air conditioning, etc.
- Minimum one (1) year experience as an automotive and diesel maintenance technician with at least one year's formal training in auto and/or diesel repair.
- Working knowledge of automotive, gas, and diesel equipment and systems.
- Working knowledge of diagnosis and troubleshooting of maintenance systems.
- Experience and skill in the repair, rebuilding and maintenance of the following: gasoline and diesel engines, automatic transmissions, air and hydraulic brakes, steering and suspension systems, rear axle and driveline, electrical systems and components, and heating/air conditioning systems.
- Must have the necessary tools associated with the work assigned to the position.
- Internal and external certification exams must be passed successfully within 9 months of employment.
MINIMUM SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Able to weld and cut with a torch.
- Able to operate machines such as a brake drum lathe and a valve re-facer. Analytical and problem solving ability.

MINIMUM LICENSES/CERTIFICATION:
- Must have ability to obtain a valid Michigan Commercial Driver's License Class B license with a passenger endorsement within six (6) months of hire, in order to operate all AAATA vehicles.
- Employees must pass AAATA-specific preventative maintenance written exam and practical skills test within six (6) months of acquiring the position.
- Employees must pass ASE Preventative Maintenance and Inspection (H8) test within nine (9) months of acquiring the position.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Constant periods of hearing, near and far acuity, depth perception and accommodation.
- Some periods of sitting.
- Frequent periods of standing and walking, climbing ladders, stooping, bending, and reaching.
- Ability to lift and carry 75 pounds.
ENVIRONMENTAL/ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS:
- Occasional exposure to noise, fumes, smoke, chemicals, fuels, cleaners, lubricants, steam, water, heat, and cold. Heavy-duty vehicle repair facility environment.
