Position Summary:
Under general supervision, ensures safe operation of the Tohono O'odham Nation's fleet vehicles and heavy machinery by performing inspection, service, and repair on vehicles and machinery, and by conducting preventive maintenance and diagnosis of mechanical and electrical problems.
The work is normally reviewed upon completion, with occasional spot checks while in process, to ensure accuracy, timeliness and conformance to established standards; major work tasks are covered by instructions or procedures and unusual situations are referred to a supervisor.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs preventive maintenance including changing engine oil and filters; greasing front ends; checking fluid levels and filling fluids; cleaning and inspecting air filters; replacing wipers, fuses and bulbs; and repairing window regulators and door handles.
- Performs tire repair and maintenance including removal, installation, flat repair, balancing and rotation.
- Removes and installs fuel pumps, fuel filters, water pumps, batteries and alternators.
- Drains, removes, and replaces transmission filters.
- Conducts maintenance and repair of wheel and axle assemblies including repacking bearings and replacement of seals.
- Completes brake inspections and repairs, including checking cylinders, surfacing drums and rotors, replacing shoes and pads, removing, assembling, and cleaning all components.
- Inspects and repairs front and rear suspension.
- Makes road calls and tows vehicles back to the Motor Pool.
- Conducts front end and rear wheel alignments.
- Performs engine tune-ups; removes and installs engines as needed.
- Removes and installs mufflers.
- Removes and replaces mechanical and electrical parts including starters, batteries, fuel pumps, alternators, relays, switches, lights and wires.
- Inspects and repairs emissions and exhaust systems.
- Conducts vehicle safety inspection, maintaining appropriate records of inspections.
- Documents all inspections and repairs in database.
- Tracks parts inventories and orders parts.
- Tracks work orders and job estimates.
- Performs other job related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
- Knowledge of materials, tools and techniques of the automotive, diesel, heavy duty and/or hydraulic maintenance trade.
- Knowledge of work hazards and safety procedures.
- Knowledge of vehicle insurance, driver safety and vehicle policies.
- Knowledge of automotive inspection practices and procedures.
- Skill in the safe operation of all types of garage equipment including tire machines, lathes, presses, alignment units, hoists, jacks, scopes, analyzers and power tools
- Skill in coordinating, prioritizing and handling multiple tasks.
- Skill in maintaining accurate records, reports, and documents.
- Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
- Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
- Ability to maintain privileged confidential information.
- Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
- Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or General Education Diploma and two years' work experience as an auto mechanic, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.
Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:
- Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record.
- May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license, (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
- If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
- Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English as a condition of employment.
