The City of Oxnard Public Works Department, Fleet Division, is seeking an experienced Fleet Services Mechanics with excellent technical and customer skills to perform professional general mechanic work.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
Perform general overhaul, tune-up, and repair work on automobiles, light, medium and heavy duty trucks, refuse vehicles, backhoe loaders, dump trucks, Fire Apparatus, Police vehicles, Police Motorcycles, mowers, motor sweepers, trailers and other off-road equipment or automotive vehicles.
Perform field or shop inspections of heavy and light equipment to determine repair needs or estimate cost of repairs; Perform field repairs as needed.
Perform metal, painting and fabrication work in the course of repair and maintenance including metal cutting with oxygen and acetylene torch or plasma cutter, arc and MIG welding, reading and interpreting schematic diagrams and body repair work.
Repair and overhaul of air and hydraulic brakes, suspension, cooling system, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies; and fire apparatus pump and accessories.
Diagnosis and repair of Gasoline, CNG and Diesel fuel systems, electrical system, hybrid electrical system, charging system, Hydraulic system, air conditioning.
Operate diagnostic machinery and equipment; perform smog tests; check for electrical and mechanical defects; complete written work orders for work performed.
Perform highly technical work on hydraulic and electrical systems; repair and install hydraulic pumps and controls; rebuild manual and automatic transmission systems.
Inspect, repair, and assemble electrical equipment such as generators, distributors, magnetos, starters and ignitions.
Repair and lubricate small pieces of automotive and mechanical equipment such as gas powered carts, lawn mowers, and power saws.
Remove and replace carburetors and fuel pumps, cooling system components, charging and starting system components, fuel and exhaust components, brake components and hydraulic cylinders.
Perform specialized technical work on gasoline, CNG and diesel engines, hybrid vehicles, air and hydraulic brake systems, electrical systems, hydraulic lift systems, fabrication projects, engine rebuilding assignments, engine tune up, and emission systems.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED / SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Receives general supervision on routine items which are performed according to established standards and procedures and receives specific work instruction regarding non-routine matters and deadlines.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This classification is distinguished from the Fleet Maintenance Technician in that it performs journey-level and skilled vehicle maintenance and repairs on all types of equipment and rolling stock.
WORK SCHEDULE: The normal work week is Monday through Thursday 6:30am to 4:30pm and alternating Fridays 6:30am to 3:30pm. Depending on area of assignment staff may be assigned to a shift that is outside the standard work hours. This position may be required to be available to work stand-by on a rotational basis and additional hours in response to peaks in workloads and changes in department needs. This position is governed by overtime provisions of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and is eligible for overtime pay.
