POSITION SUMMARY
As the working leader, provides guidance in a variety of maintenance, repair tasks, and training along with assisting other Mechanics. Coordinates and facilitates the maintenance and repair of City owned vehicles and equipment, as well as the activities of mechanics and other maintenance personnel. This position will perform maintenance and repair of City owned vehicles and equipment. Work is performed independently or with crews in accordance with accepted trade practices.
ILLUSTRATIVE JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Directs, supervises, evaluates, and oversees fleet department personnel including scheduling, authorizing overtime, vacation time and compensatory time off.
- As needed in absence of Fleet Maintenance Supervisor, working foreman shall submit division payroll records.
- Working with department manager, develops specifications for equipment purchases.
- Monitors employees for compliance with safety rules, regulations, and City policies and procedures.
- Provides resources such as equipment and materials for fleet operations, maintenance, repair, and installation.
- Prioritizes vehicle repair requests based on seasonal and departmental needs; schedules and assigns daily work orders to division employees.
- Coordinates routine, preventative and other maintenance with departments.
- Plans, coordinates, and evaluates preventative maintenance schedules for all vehicles and mechanical equipment.
- Performs skilled inspection, diagnosis, and repair of assigned vehicles and equipment.
- Assists with development and implementation of the Division Budget.
- Monitors work areas to ensure they are safe and orderly, stays current on shop safety best practices, and regularly educates staff on safety.
- Identifies, develops and coordinates training for staff as needed.
- Prepares accurate, complete records and reports as required.
- Monitor telematics, GPS and other software to ensure proper function.
- Enters applicable data and records into Fleet Management System in a timely manner.
- May be required to handle emergency calls and repairs that occur outside of the regular shift.
- Perform testing and prepare reports as needed on new equipment, tools and processes including oil samples, tires, and supplemental equipment.
- Develops invoicing for equipment not assigned to MERF program
- Coordinate and manage fuel site to include maintenance and upkeep of equipment
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Associate's degree in an Automotive/Diesel Technology program, preferred.
- Must possess a minimum of six (6) years experience in repair and maintenance of automotive, heavy duty trucks, heavy equipment and gas and diesel engines.
- Must possess a minimum of two (2) years supervisory experience overseeing a maintenance shop, preferred.
Knowledge of:
- Operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines and equipment, and of the mechanical repair of heavy duty trucks and construction equipment.
- Safety requirements, occupational hazards, and safety precautions, including those related to handling of hazardous materials.
- Methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of a variety of light and heavy vehicles and mechanical equipment.
Ability to:
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions, as well as establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
- Plan, organize, and oversee the work performed by fleet staff.
- Diagnose automotive defects and failures and use tools and equipment to repair and maintain vehicles.
- Solve complex problems and work effectively under time constraints.
- Read and work from sketches, blueprints, diagrams, and written instructions.
- Input, access, and retrieve data from a computer using standard business software and automated fleet management systems.
- To work various shifts on weekdays and/or weekends as needed.
Special Requirements:
- Must possess and maintain a certification from the State of Michigan as a Master Automobile Mechanic and Master Heavy-duty Truck mechanic.
- Must possess and maintain a State of Michigan, CDL, Class "A", with air brakes endorsement.
- Must possess and maintain forklift certification. If not in possession at the time of job offer, must be completed within 90 days of job start date.
