Founded as an orphanage in 1831, Rising Ground provides therapeutic treatments and trauma-informed supports that meet the physical, mental health, psychological, and educational needs of youth and adults facing a myriad of complex challenges.
Responsibilities
Floating Recreation Specialist
Locations: 3620 Marolla Place Bronx & 3030 Brunner Ave, Bronx
The Recreation Specialist will provide the opportunity for infants, children and youths up to 16 years of age to exercise, socialize and learn developmentally appropriate skills through organized recreational activities. The work requires the application of specialized skills and training, planning and organizational skills to meet the needs of the group being served. The Floating Recreational Specialist will provide services to both Bruner and New View on the alternate days when the assigned Recreational Specialist is not present.
Essential Functions:
- Coordinate and facilitate structured activities for children and youths at the facility
- Create and promote a positive environment to encourage age-appropriate play and activities.
- Maintain and update program documentation.
- Works closely with the Program Director and staff members to ensure quality services are provided.
- Attend all meetings as required with supervisors
- Evaluate the overall need, cost, quality and effectiveness of activities and programs and recommend improvements and changes.
- Conduct regular safety inspections of recreation equipment and grounds.
- Request personnel, participants, supplies and equipment as necessary for week activities. Develop a weekly calendar for play groups and activities that is distributed to all Child Care Worker Staff. Prepare announcements, bulletins, flyers, calendars and other promotional material
- Requisition, secure and inventory necessary materials, supplied and equipment.
- Motivate residents to become involved in recreation programs by participating and leading specific activities.
- Develop open communication with local parks department and recreation centers.
- Plan and develop cultural activities with supervision.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or Associate’s degree in Recreation, Therapy, Education, Health Education, Health Services Administration: Public Health and related field required.
- 2 years’ experience in a role where activities (Arts, Sports, etc.) were facilitated for young children.
- Positive attitude and professional demeanor, good ethical and moral character.
- Must work well with others and have good written & verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of recreational programming and the basic fundamentals of common recreational sports and activities.
- Ability to operate a computer and associated software to prepare promotional materials, calendars, and reports.
Physical Requirements: Must have the ability to complete all standard administrative and support tasks including but not limited to climbing up and down stairs, operations of computers/phones/fax/printer/copy machine, and the ability to life boxes, furniture and equipment up to 30lbs. Must be able to travel from the various locations and sites of Sheltering Arms. Ability to perform physical restraint of youths using approved restraint techniques. Physical and PPD clearances required and reevaluated annually.
