Job Summary and Qualifications
POSITION SUMMARY:
The coordinator is responsible under the supervision of the Unit Director, for the supervision of daily activities of the L&D/PP unit and staff to assure quality patient care. Coordinates the efforts of the staff in order to meet the needs of the patient’s and customers. Coordinates the system of internal controls and evaluates the quality of performance in carrying out the staff duties as per policies and their assigned responsibilities. To increase the quality of patient care by assisting with organization of educational and QI programs. To assist in the development, organization, implementation and maintenance of a quality improvement process program for the Maternity Unit. To perform chart audits for quality improvement of documentation and risk reduction, in order to maintain and/or improve patient outcomes. To collaborate and assist the Unit Director in developing and implementing projects that enhances the quality of the Maternity Unit. Assists in maintaining records of departmental control activities, i.e. temperature logs, communication logs, collecting staffing sheets, assignment sheets, vacation requests, shift exchange forms, maintaining adequate levels of Doctors orders and all forms required for the daily operation of the units. Every month collects all information from delivery book for statistics purposes and compiles report for unit Director. Assists unit Director with coding and billing for clinic patients and inpatient status on daily basis (ancillary charge reports).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervises, in collaboration with the Unit Director, the daily operation of the Maternity unit.
- Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of educational activities related to the Maternity unit, patient needs and staff needs.
- Responsible for assisting in the gathering of data on monthly basis for PRMI projects, QI, PI, monthly statistics or any other quality data assigned by Unit Director. Prepares report for Quarterly submission of data. Assists with documentation of reportable events, occurrence reports.
- Responsible for assisting in the development, implementation, and evaluation of projects to enhance and increase the qualities of care and increase patient safety.
- Demonstrates knowledge of general unit procedures, surgeries, policies and procedures, acuity levels of patients, and appropriate staffing ratios, in order to collaborate with Physicians, other departments and staff for effective coordination and scheduling of procedures for utmost patient safety.
- Utilizes professional skills and judgments when assisting in making the schedules, assuring appropriate mixture of experienced and inexperienced staff.
- Assists in monitoring scheduled procedures continuously to ensure even distribution on daily basis, communicating with charge Nurses appropriate number of scheduled procedures to be performed based on staff availability and patient census.
- Actively participates in hospital committees and intradepartmental team meetings, preparing agendas and meeting minutes. Places copies in communication book for staff to read, sends out messages as per Unit Director’s instructions.
- Monitors supplies and equipment orders placed by OB Techs, assuring that supplies, instruments and equipment are routinely available to perform procedures. Communicates with Unit Director regularly to ensure unit adequately supplied with appropriate levels staying within the budgetary levels.
- Assists in maintaining records of departmental control activities, ie. Temperature logs daily, crash carts checked by Charge nurses, narcotics counts, communication logs, collecting staffing sheets, assignment sheets, vacation requests, maintaining adequate levels of Doctor’s orders and all forms required for the daily operation of the units.
- Assists unit Director with coding and billing for clinic patients and assists daily with ancillary charge reports, verifying accuracy with unit Director and maintaining log book.
- Assists Unit Director with problem resolution of the services provided.
What qualifications you will need:
REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma, some college preferred
- Knowledge of general hospital operations
- Proficient in Excel, power point, and word
- Proficient in KRONOS payroll system
- Knowledge of coding and billing (clinic E&M sheets) Will provide on the job training
- One year experience in hospital setting as unit secretary/coordinator preferred
PREFERRED EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Computer literate with excellent documentation and order entry skills, excellent organizational skills.
- One year QI/PI experience.
- Ability to listen, empathize and respond to patient, family, internal and external customer’s needs.
- Encourages team-building efforts.
- Ability to maintain on daily basis ancillary charge reports/corrections and maintain log book.
