Summary
Reporting to the Director, Food Safety, the Manager, Food Safety is responsible for development, oversight and continuous improvement of the Company’s food safety system including implementation of programs, policies and procedures and training. The Manager will support the sales team and interact with customers on all issues regarding food safety.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Partner with Director, Food Safety to develop food safety strategies, policies, and procedures designed to ensure compliance with regulatory and customer requirements.
- Track, trend and communicate food safety KPIs identified through various channels including audits, internal audit, operations feedback and/or customer service.
- Determine and implement corrective actions and preventive measures to address program deviations, audit findings, customer feedback and/or unforeseen events.
- Audit, evaluate, and reinforce food safety programs including HACCP, food defense, regulatory compliance, allergen program, GMP’s, recalls, and microbiological/environmental testing to ensure compliance with preventive controls program and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Maintain food safety related data as required by SQF audit, Food Safety/HACCP and local/state/federal regulatory agencies.
- Provide regulatory guidance, answer compliance-related questions, and advise leadership on emerging/new regulations. Communicate up-to-date knowledge of current food safety regulations.
- Key point contact for mock recalls and product recall program.
- Responsible for developing curriculum and ensuring all employees are trained on food safety requirements, GMP's, and related programs.
- Reviewing supplier documents to ensure compliance with company food safety requirements.
- Review HACCP/Food safety plan when new ingredients, packaging and finished goods are introduced to the facility. Ensure all risks are identified, reviewed, and communicated to leadership. Review shelf-life capabilities of ingredients and products.
- Collaborate with sanitation department to improve sanitation practices and procedures. Validate sanitation procedures to ensure compliance to Food Safety requirements.
- Verify and audit the Food Safety capabilities, conditions, and execution of food safety procedures for any third-party warehouses used for over-flow storage.
- Actively participate in regulatory, customer and/or 3rd party Food Safety Audits.
- Back up Quality Assurance Manager as necessary.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in food science, food safety, biology, microbiology, or related field.
- 3+ years of food safety management / leadership experience in manufacturing with demonstrated success in developing and implementing food safety programs.
- HACCP certification required.
- Knowledge of product traceability.
- Knowledge of food safety, food processing technology, sanitation practices, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), HACCP principles and FSMA rules
- Sound PC skills (MS Office).
- Strong analytical, written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
- Proven leadership competencies in driving resolution/results, creative problem solving and improving food safety and quality performance consistency.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree related to food science.
- FSMA PCQI and GFSI (SQF, BRC etc.) certifications
- Interpret data to drive evidence-based decision making.
- Bakery manufacturing experience.
