Summary:
This position is primarily responsible for developing and/or adapting curriculum for use by others in delivering foreign language instruction to military personnel. This position may occasionally perform foreign language instruction as requested.
Specific duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Develop, revise, and maintain curriculum; provide technical expertise in instructional methodology, tests and measurement, and courseware format guidelines for use by Foreign Language Instructors.
- Assist in maintaining and contributing to a database of relevant Programs of Instruction (POIs) for use by Foreign Language Instructors.
- Provide technical assistance to Foreign Language Instructors, including guidance on how to update lesson plans for currency in alignment with POIs.
- Incorporate new curriculum into the teaching process (for example, develop clarification or examples of application related to the subject matter).
- Develop strategies for instructional delivery combination (e.g., large group, small group or independent learning; instructor-led, student-led, or computer-based; seminar/lecture or hands-on/practical application, blended multilevel classroom) for effective learning.
- Plan and design delivery methods as requested.
- Assist with research and development of instructional products.
- For computer-based learning: plan/design levels of interactivity; research technologies available for implementation; determine platform(s) for delivery; develop storyboards, graphic placement, and narration; test completed products for usability.
- Develop alternative teaching techniques and scenarios for Foreign Language Instructors to maintain high motivation and interest in the subject areas.
- Conduct test analysis and develop or revise test items.
- Perform other duties as required or directed to meet performance requirements, including periodic instruction either of Foreign Language Instructors or military personnel in accordance with approved curriculum to maintain proficiency and to evaluate and develop new instructional techniques/courses.
- Develop materials to support government curriculum development projects.
Required Qualifications:
- At least 5 years of designing instructional materials for adult learners in relevant foreign language and culture topics.
- Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
- Maintain a minimum ILR 4 in each modality to be taught in the target language, as well as a minimum Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) L3/R3/S3/W3 in English.
- Maintain expertise in using methods and materials that facilitate proficiency based (refers to ILR scale level of proficiency in a foreign language), as well as the ability to develop authentic materials or modify/repurpose traditional language materials using the ILR Language Skill Level Descriptions to tailor curricula to meet student needs. This includes translation of materials into the target language for instructional purposes and ensuring that materials prepared are at the appropriate level of proficiency.
- Must be familiar with current strategies and theories that address myriad adult learner individual differences (age, sex/gender, education level, experience level, motivation, rank, socioeconomic status, personal history, etc.).
- Possess experience in word processing using foreign fonts, and familiarity with working in a Windows (MS Office) environment. Instructors shall have experience in using templates to create computer assisted instruction lessons in support of their lesson plans or as stand-alone lessons for homework.
- Possess expertise in integrating audio, video, and computer assisted multi-media into the foreign language instructional materials.
- Possess experience in the operation and use of a modern classroom and web-based technologies (such as interactive whiteboards and touchscreens, multi-media players, and WebTools) as curriculum development and teaching resources.
- Work in an office environment and conduct professional tasks such as operate computers, projection technology, smartboards, phones, and other instructional/learning devices and materials.
- Job may entail both standing and sitting for long periods of time with regular breaks.
- Ability to use a computer monitor for extended periods of time.
