The mission of the Colorado Tourism Office (CTO) is to drive traveler spending through promotion and development of compelling, sustainable travel experiences throughout our four-corner state. The CTO promotes Colorado to travelers through Colorado Welcome Centers, domestic and international marketing, public relations, social media, the Official State Vacation Guide and colorado.com . The CTO collaborates with destination marketing organizations, local communities, industry associations, government agencies and private businesses both to market Colorado to travelers and support development of new travel opportunities. The CTO is focused on a vision to position Colorado as the premier U.S. destination for active, outdoor and unique experiences that make you feel truly alive. The FY25 budget is $33.8 million.
The Welcome Center program supports the CTO’s mission by providing visitors with travel information that inspires them to lengthen their travel itinerary while enhancing their Colorado experience.
Description of Job

POSITION
The Assistant Manager supports the Manager at the Colorado Welcome Center Fruita, by providing oversight of operations, training and scheduling of Volunteer Travel Counselors, managing travel literature and performing additional administrative duties. This position schedule is Thursday-Sunday during summer months and Wednesday- Saturday during winter months ; additionally the welcome center only closes major holidays during the winter months and sharing holiday shifts is required. This position requires often standing on feet and the ability to lift and/or move boxes up to 30 pounds.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
+ Assist Manager with scheduling duties and ensure adequate coverage of the Welcome Center with volunteer Travel Counselors and/or paid staff.
+ This position is weekend management (Thursday-Sunday during summer months and Wednesday- Saturday during winter months). Management is the oversight of volunteers and coverage of the center; additionally the welcome center only closes major holidays during the winter months and sharing holiday shifts is required.
+ Physical duties involve handling freight and storeroom organization. Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds and work on feet throughout the day.
+ Ensure the front desk is covered during business hours: this means ensuring coverage either by the volunteers or management yourself. Schedule is Thursday-Sunday during summer months and Wednesday- Saturday during winter months.
+ Advise travelers of Colorado’s tourism industry, geography, road and weather conditions.
+ Manage the ordering, receiving and displaying of travel literature.
+ Prepare and present trainings for volunteer Travel Counselors, as directed by the Manager.
+ Carry out research, organization and execution of volunteer enhancement events- including study tours with the Manager.
+ Organize and attend volunteer recruitment events.
+ Support manager as requested with monthly visitation reports, Compile monthly volunteer hours and milestones and other administrative tasks, as directed by the Manager.
+ Participate in current management professional development and volunteer management courses, as directed by the manager.
+ Participate in necessary technology trainings, per the CTO Director of Visitor Services, to maintain any technology programs and devices in welcome centers.
+ Complies with all state policies and procedures.
+ Operates within a set budget.
+ Occasional in-state travel required.
+ Other duties as assigned by the Welcome Center Manager.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
This position requires a self-starter who is outgoing, enthusiastic; possess strong leadership abilities with a positive attitude and good judgment. The ideal candidate should have exceptional interpersonal communication skills; ability to work independently, capable of multi-tasking and anticipate needs to proactively assist others. Additionally, the candidate must demonstrate conflict resolution and management skills and capabilities, and have a flexible schedule. Candidates with volunteer management experience preferred. Excellent proficiency in Google Apps, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel is essential. The candidate must be able to stand on feet for extended periods of time and lift/move boxes up to 30 pounds. Finally, candidates must be available to work weekends and some of the major holidays.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree or equivalent (4) years experience in; volunteer management, hospitality, project management, guest relations, administration, or office management.
Conditions of Employment
+ Applicants must pass a thorough background check prior to employment.

Supplemental Information
Salary Range: $32,000 - $36,000 Annually
This position is considered non-classified, which means the position is not part of the Colorado State Personnel System. Therefore, the individual appointed to this position is considered at-will, and is not covered by the State Personnel Rules or the State Classification System. However, this position does come with the same benefits (retirement, insurance, etc.) as every other State employee, and with the same opportunities, pride and passion that comes with working for the great State of Colorado. Even though employment is at-will, non-classified positions have protections against discrimination and retaliation in state and federal employment laws. “At-will” employment means that either the employee or the State may terminate the employment relationship at any time for any reason or no reason, with or without notice or cause, as long as no federal or state law is violated.
