Job Description:
United Hospital District is looking for a full time Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)/Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT). This position is for a generalist who will be responsible for sample collection and processing and performing various tests on patient samples in the following areas of the lab: Hematology, Chemistry, Coagulation, Microbiology, and Blood bank. The MLS/MT/MLT will follow standard operating procedures to ensure laboratory safety, quality and regulatory requirements are met. They will need to be able to collaborate with other departments and serve as a laboratory resource to other professionals/departments.
Essential Functions:
- Accurately performs and reports waived, moderate and high-complexity tests.
- Maintains in-depth knowledge of all laboratory procedures performed.
- Performs preventative and corrective maintenance on Laboratory analyzers and instruments.
- Interprets results for accuracy, completion, and correlation with physiological condition; correct any problems or refer to manager or Lab Director.
- Recognizes and reports abnormal results, report critical values to appropriate nurse or provider within specified time frame, refer implausible results to manager or Lab Director.
- Maintains a working knowledge of reagent stability and storage.
- Performs venipuncture, fingerstick, or heel stick on patients by choosing appropriate site and device, with the ability to assess and react effectively to the unique needs of each patient.
- Performs EKG's on patients.
- Evaluates the acceptability of specimens within appropriate guidelines and ensure that unacceptable specimens are rejected and recollected within appropriate time frames.
- Sets work priorities to accommodate stat, critical, and routine testing, with the ability to perform Lab testing on several patients simultaneously.
- Performs QC and calibrations as assigned and take appropriate remedial action on waived, moderate, and high-complexity Lab tests, notifying the manager of any discrepancies.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent, plus graduation from an accredited school with a bachelor's degree in Medical Technology/Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent OR
- Graduation from an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician school.
- Certification by ASCP or equivalent.
Schedule:
This is a full-time weekend day shift position working Friday, Saturday and Sunday 9am - 9pm.
