JOB TITLE: Gear Up Academic Specialist
REPORTS TO: Building Principal

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The primary object of this position is to significantly improve student’s academic performance in mathematics, science and language arts through the delivery of a wide range of instructional support and intervention services.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*:
- Identify and service eligible Gear Up students at assigned school sites.
- Work and collaborate effectively with teachers and other school personnel to identify and meet the academic needs of Gear Up students.
- Develop daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly work schedules based upon established priorities that maximize services to Gear Up students (by addressing the greatest needs of the greatest number of students).
- Assist with a wide range of direct academic and instructional assistance, enrichment, intervention, remediation, and support activities.
- This position will assist certificated staff with in-class and out-of-class instruction and tutoring, in-school and out-of-school instruction and tutoring, individual and small-group instruction and tutoring, resource room instruction and tutoring, the team-teaching.
- Assist with a wide range of indirect academic and instructional assistance, enrichment, intervention, remediation, and support activities and services including - but not limited to - the following: arranging/coordinating students participation in teacher-based and other school-based tutoring opportunities, scheduling meetings with counselors and other school-based personnel, identifying other appropriate services in the school, district and community for students and families, and encouraging student participation in all GearUp and other academic remediation/enrichment programs.
- Assist with the coordination of counseling, guidance, and mentoring support for GearUp students in the areas of academic achievement, college awareness/readiness, school success (attendance, behavior, personal and social issues) and life-skills (e.g. organization skills, time management, individual and social responsibilities, and work ethic).
- Contact and communicate directly with parents/guardians on a regular basis to ensure parent awareness of and involvement in school performance and to secure parent support of student participation in GearUp, school, and other activities.
- Promote, support and encourage student participation in all GearUP activities and services.
- Function as a GearUp team member at the school site by working collaboratively, cooperatively and effectively with other Academic Specialists, and other staff.
- Maintain accurate data, records, and student files to document all activities conducted and services provided.
- Report daily in the designated database/data collection system all services delivered to/for GearUp students, parents/guardians, and educators.
- Submit accurate, complete and timely data and performance reports as required.
- Develop and implement the GearUp program in the assigned school.
- Document activities for program reporting requirements and external evaluator.
- Identify and record cost-share activities for required program goals.
- Coordinate with the school district staff and parents to establish GearUp goals and objectives in the school environment.
- Recruit student and parents for the GearUp program and maintain suitable levels of environment in activities by implementing appropriate follow-up strategies.
- Provide student tutoring - before or after school.
- Work with students to individualize college planning and preparation by providing field trips to campuses, mentors, and personalized financial aid and college entrance assistance.
- Coordinate with parents, teachers, and administrators to develop an academic enrichment program for educational advancement and achievements.
- Coordinate with colleges, universities, and community resource agencies to provide students with college/career awareness opportunities.
- Work with counselors, teachers and other support staff to identify at-risk students in need of academic support services.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
- Perform other duties related to GearUp Program Targets/Benchmarks and strategies as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred.
- Strong background in mathematics and science required, college degree in mathematics or science preferred
- Experience working with youth required.
