A Brief Summary of This Position:
The Global Logistics Manager is a member of the Global Logistics team and is responsible for the strategy and governance of the International Transportation function across all Valmont locations in the NA, CALA, EMEA, and APAC Regions. Within the area of global shipping, the incumbent works with regional International Transportation resources to 1) drive overall improvement of enterprise value chains for the customer, 2) implement policy and process to reduce costs while improving service levels and working capital, 3) identify and implement best in class processes, technologies and talent resources, 4) assess, develop and strengthen logistics team talent and, 5) minimize company risk and drive EHSS and ESG programs. The Global Logistics Manager is required to operate within a matrix managed organization so as well as directly determining the vision and direction of the function, it is required to influence and negotiate with other parts of the business to adopt and support its recommendations. The Global Logistics Manager interacts with internal Division and Business Unit management including Sales, Operations, Safety, Quality, Sourcing, Materials Management, Order Management, Accounting, and externally with third party freight forwarders, Customs brokers, carriers and government regulatory agencies. The leader must keep abreast of changes and trends within the international transportation industry, including pricing, capacity, business practices as well as with regulations in all countries we operate in. With the changing nature of the global footprint and landscape, it will be necessary to operate in a continuous improvement environment and review all regional logistics operations on an on-going basis and potentially create new logistics models that are fit for purpose and support the organization’s growth aspirations. The position will provide support to all global business units and will work with those business units toward the development of a global model that ensures that international issues, risks, and trends are aligned across the organization.
Essential Functions:
- This position reports into the Senior Director of Global Logistics
- This role requires up to 20% travel (internationally/domestically), including overnight stays
- Manage team of four International Transportation team members in NA through dotted line reporting relationship and International Transportation leaders across the CALA, EMEA, and APAC regions. These teams are responsible for international pricing, capacity, and bookings in support of the businesses located world-wide.
- Act as the subject matter expert of global transportation and stay informed on global transportation news, market trends, and current events
- Lead continuous process improvement initiatives across the globe supporting international transportation, procurement, and vendor relationship management
- Ability to develop and sustain effective relationships with internal customers and external service providers
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally to all levels of the organization
- Self-starter with excellent organizational skills in planning and organizing to handle multiple tasks concurrently
- Proven ability to negotiate effectively
Other Important Details about the Role:
- Responsible for leading global contract negotiations and drafting language for region specific or global contracts with freight forwarders, Customs brokers and carriers
- Implement and maintain logistics service provider performance metrics and standardized reporting across the globe
- Partner with Tax and Trade Compliance resources to design, implement and manage processes to ensure compliance with customs regulations around the world
- Responsible for developing and executing global risk mitigation strategies
- Create executive summaries for key initiatives, escalations, and market trends and present to leadership
- Extensive knowledge of project management best practices and tools, and ability to effectively manage large strategic projects with minimal supervision
- Lead Logistics efforts during any type of Valmont merger or acquisition
- Develop and maintain relationships with third-party carriers, freight forwarders and Customs brokers. Establish contractual agreements, execute business reviews, maintain performance metrics, and periodically report performance through scorecards.
- Support the implementation, updating, and successful use of global systems for international teams including TMS, track and trace software, and other systems as applicable
- Engage in a strong working relationship with procurement and buying resources when negotiating freight terms of purchase; resolve supplier side shipping/export issues
- Working knowledge of Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) Codes for exported products along with any Export Control Classification Number (ECCN)
- Working knowledge of International Incoterms and Letters of Credit following the UCP 600 Rules
Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
- Preferred Bachelors with 7+ years relevant experience OR Associates with 9+ years relevant experience or 11+ years relevant experience
- International transportation and/or supply chain management experience in manufacturing environment
- Demonstrated ability to work independently within a global and changing environment, including completion of tasks among different complexity levels
- Knowledge of air and ocean shipping and forwarding
- Experience with customs clearance, documentation, and duty drawback
- Strong working knowledge of TMS, global track and trace systems, and MRP/ERP systems
- Proven track record of influencing without authority and managing a highly effective team of logistics professionals, directly and indirectly
- Strong analytical, financial, and P&L skills. Demonstrated ability of managing cost performance and supply/demand forecasting.
- Experience negotiating global transportation agreements providing the best possible service and rates and managing requirements of third-party logistics providers
- Possess advanced problem-solving skills with attention to detail
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Outlook
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, International Business, Supply Chain Management, or Finance
- Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA)
- Experience with Logistics Control Towers
- Experience implementing and leading an organization via best in class change management protocol
Working Environment and Physical Efforts:
Work is typically performed in an office setting. The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings. Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time. Up to 15% travel expectations that require overnight stays. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer. The employee is occasionally required to move about the office. Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
