The Resources & Services Assistant (GLP) participates in the management and maintenance of the tangible library collection, and supports user services at various access points within the library. The Resources & Services Assistant also supports law library digital initiatives, including maintenance of an institutional repository, production and content of online user guides, and assists with technology troubleshooting for library users. The Resources & Services Assistant will also be provided an opportunity to gain library experience working with both the circulation and the reference and research department.
Required: Candidates should submit a resume and cover letter as part of their application. The cover letter should include a statement of the candidate's current application or admission status with the CUA Department of Library and Information Science, as a prerequisite for this appointment is admission to that program.
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is: $17.50/hour
Responsibilities:- Participates in management of the tangible collection through receiving, binding, processing and shelving new materials, as assigned.
- Adds bibliographic and holdings metadata for digital resources to the online catalog. Performs associated catalog maintenance, such as URL checking and authority work.
- Assists library users at the circulation desk and/or the reference desk as assigned. Under the supervision of reference librarians, may provide research assistance to students and faculty, as assigned.
- Under the direction of the Acquisitions/Cataloging Librarian, orders books, completes basic copy-cataloging, and assists with tracking the receipt of new materials.
- Assists with expense tracking and accounting document maintenance; this will include correspondence with accounts payable as needed. Will gain an understanding of library administrative procedures regarding the budget and the University budget cycle.
- Under the supervision of Public Services Librarians, supports the maintenance of LibGuides and content on the library website.
- Participates in development of library web pages, user guides and other web-based services.
- Creates and maintains written procedures, guidelines and training materials for assigned tasks. Regularly informs supervisor of the status of current assignments, including difficulties encountered, steps taken, and projects completed.
- Under the direction of the Acquisitions/Cataloging Librarian, and in collaboration with library staff, completes regular maintenance of the library’s physical collection including location changes, withdrawals, weeding, shifting, and long-term preservation projects including relabeling and preparing bindery shipments.
- Provides ongoing support for development of digital collections, such as the institutional repository, through batch-loading, scanning, editing, spell-checking and creation and manipulation of metadata.
- A Bachelor's Degree
- Must be accepted into the MSLIS degree program of the CUA Department of Library and Information Science (DLIS) and must remain a student in good standing at DLIS, making reasonable progress
towards the MSLIS degree. Candidates understands that their employment in the position will terminate upon their completion of the MLIS degree. - This position is designated for the Graduate Library Pre-Professional Program, and it is open to applicants with no library work experience. Some experience in a library setting, preferably in a law library, is desired.
- Proficiency in common computer applications (word processing, spreadsheets, email).
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Familiarity with the structure and elements of bibliographic records.
- Familiarity with legal materials and their supplementation patterns.
