The Humboldt Sawmill Company (HSC) is looking for a an experienced Grader (Auto Technician) - Optimizing Scanner to join our Swing Shift Planer team in Scotia, CA. The Primary focus of this position is to Inspect and grade milled, rough sawed, or dimensional stock lumber through automated grading and optimizing systems while maintaining grade accuracy.
This position offers an hourly rate of $27.65 - $36.65 depending on experience and includes full benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, 401K matching and life insurance.
In aggregate, the Mendocino Companies (Mendocino Forest Products Company, Mendocino Redwood Company, Humboldt Redwood Company, Humboldt Sawmill Company, and Allweather Wood) own nearly 450,000 acres of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C031337) certificated redwood and Douglas-fir timberland, constitute the largest waterborne wood treater in the Western USA, and is the largest producer of redwood lumber in the world. Responsibilities:
Summary
Inspects and grades milled, rough sawed, or dimensional stock lumber through automated grading and optimizing systems while maintaining grade accuracy

- Assure safe workplace practices are followed and promote safety awareness
- Examine lumber for defects such as knots, stains, decay, splits, faulty edges, pitch pockets, wormholes, or defective milling and calibrate the scanner as needed to determine cuts to be made to obtain highest marketable value from the product
- Perform grade checks and work with graders to provide training and development of grader skills
- Focus on continuous improvement and product quality
- Discuss quality control concerns with management and Quality Assurance Director
- Ensure that the scanner is clean and perform scanner maintenance as needed
- Responsible for grade accuracy of machine and check graders
- Perform check grader responsibilities as needed
- Monitor reject product
- Carry out special projects as assigned
- At least 2 years’ experience in lumber grading or relevant experience in lumber manufacturing
- Certified grader in NGR and redwood grades preferred, other grader certification will be considered
- Optimizing scanner experience preferred
- Working knowledge of Microsoft applications
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs
- Read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos
- Effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to employees of the organization
- Cable of understanding and carrying out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
- Resolve problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations with Optimization Software is required
Physical Requirements

- This position requires the employee to view a computer screen and use a keyboard for extended periods of time.
- While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly exposed to machinery in operation, fumes, dust, and loud noise environments.
- This position requires wearing eye protection, hearing protection, safety shoes, leather or rubber gloves, and hard hat.
