DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Graduate Engineer provides a support role within the Office of The City Engineer (OCE). OCE is dedicated to enforcing the City of Houston's (City) Infrastructure Design Manual for both public and private capital improvement within the City's right-of way. The candidate will be expected to receive a professional engineering license within five years of being hired as a graduate engineer.
Key Responsibilities:
Reviews public roadway geometry and traffic related projects, CIP projects, street and traffic design plans, and works with team on private development design plans, traffic studies, plat reviews, IDM Variances, customer walk ins service for compliance with State and Federal Regulations, the City’s Code of Ordinance, and the City’s Infrastructure Design Manual to ensure the proper design and construction. Develops design criteria as needed. Reviews and evaluates the adequacy of various products submitted by vendors for use throughout the City’s infrastructure. Assists the Supervising and Managing Engineers to complete tasks and special projects as required. Discusses engineering matters and provides guidance to consultants, developers, owners, and the public with regards to engineering design requirements. Requires ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and provide excellent customer relations. Performs other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position is physically comfortable; the individual has some discretion about walking, standing, bending, lifting etc.
This is a Houston Public Works Department position at the Tier III Level.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires graduation from approved curriculum in engineering that is approved by the State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers with a satisfactory standing.
OR
Requires graduation from an engineering or related science curriculum at a recognized institution of higher education, other than a curriculum approved by the Board and passage of the eight-hour fundamentals of engineering examination prescribe by the Board.
OR
Possession of a valid Engineering-in-Training (EIT) Certificate issued by the Board under the current requirements of the Texas Engineering Practice Act.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such person possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such person are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
