The Grossing Technician is responsible for the initial processing and examination of medical specimens, including the preparation and preservation of tissue samples for further histological analysis. This role is crucial in pathology labs, where accurate and detailed tissue preparation is essential for diagnosis.
Key Responsibilities:
- Specimen Handling and Preparation:
- Receive and accession surgical specimens, ensuring accurate labeling and documentation.
- Perform gross examination of specimens, describing the size, color, weight, and any other pertinent characteristics.
- Dissect and section tissues as required, selecting appropriate samples for further microscopic examination.
- Prepare tissue samples for fixation, embedding, and staining processes.
- Documentation and Data Entry:
- Accurately document gross findings and enter relevant data into laboratory information systems (LIS).
- Maintain clear and concise records of specimens, including tracking their progress through the lab.
- Compliance and Safety:
- Follow all laboratory safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and proper handling of biohazardous materials.
- Adhere to regulations regarding specimen storage, disposal, and transportation.
- Ensure compliance with CLIA, CAP, and other relevant regulatory standards.
- Equipment Maintenance:
- Operate and maintain grossing station equipment, including dissecting tools, scales, and microscopes.
- Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of work areas and instruments to prevent contamination and ensure accurate results.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with pathologists, histotechnologists, and other lab personnel to ensure timely and accurate specimen processing.
- Communicate any unusual findings or potential issues to the supervising pathologist.
- Quality Control:
- Participate in quality control and quality assurance activities to maintain high standards of lab performance.
- Assist in the training of new staff or interns in grossing techniques and lab protocols.
Qualifications:
- Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as biology, medical technology, or a related scientific discipline.
- At least 1 year grossing experience preferred
- Experience in a clinical or pathology lab setting is preferred.
