Position Summary/Objective:
The Grossing Technician is responsible for performing all technical aspects of receiving, accessioning, dissecting and dictating surgical specimens within their achieved competency level. Individuals must expand their knowledge of the disease process in order to master specimens of increasing complexity. Responsible for ensuring quality, consistency, and efficiency of specimens. Tissue specimens received from surgical or diagnostic cases are sorted, logged and prioritized according to the standards required.
Essential Functions:

- Receive and verify patient information on all paperwork & specimen containers for accuracy.
- Accurately accessions all cases into the appropriate Laboratory Information Systems, prints bar-coded tissue cassettes, updates and edits histology trim sheet in Laboratory Information Systems, prepares specimens for send-out testing.
- Performs all technical aspects of grossing and dictating surgical specimens using a variety of laboratory materials and equipment (scalpels, paddle razors, bone saw, cryostat, etc.).
- Maintains cassettes accuracy, slide filing, laboratory records, pathology equipment and logs, and assists with frozen section procedures.
- Communicates with pathologist, peers, internal and external clients.
- Assists with supply ordering and inventory.
- Maintains cleanliness of gross room.
- Maintains supplies and overall cleanliness of gross room.
- Assist in the tissue processing area.
- Assist in the pathology reception area.
- Label chemical waste barrels and appropriately discard chemical waste in accordance with all local, State, and federal guidelines.
- Participates in Quality Assurance (QA) Reviews.
- Assist with laboratory accreditation inspection preparations.
- Must work the hours required for each specific location.
- Must observe and follow all rules, requirements, and regulations.

Qualifications:
- Associates Degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology or have equivalent education/training that includes 60 semester hours.
- Education/training must include at least 24 semester hours of science that includes 6 hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory terminology in any combination.
- At least one year of progressively responsible experience that demonstrates the knowledge and skills needed to perform gross dissection and dictation of tissue.
- Understanding of pathology practices and surgical terminology.
Must obtain a minimum of 10 CEU credits per year in surgical pathology and/or other closely related subjects (i.e., Microbiology, Radiology, etc.).
