Group Leader - Irradiation Sciences - Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

**Overview** At a time when complex environmental problems are emerging on every front, the Nuclear Sciences Division's staff, capabilities, and facilities are delivering science and technology innovations for the environment, as well as for energy and national security needs. Our diverse work addresses a wide range of national and international challenges, from providing solutions that protect the health of people who must work in hazardous environments, to developing durable new materials, streamlining industrial processes for improved productivity and effectiveness, and delivering new approaches for environmental cleanup. Nuclear Sciences Division capabilities and efforts are focused in three key areas including Environmental Health and Remediation, Nuclear Regulatory, and Nuclear Energy. The Nuclear Sciences Division within the Energy and Environment Directorate at PNNL is seeking a Group Leader (GL) to lead the Irradiation Sciences (IS) Group. The GL is a key interface between various business, line, project management, and support functions within PNNL. The role of the GL is to maintain and develop technical capabilities that are aligned with research areas and business needs. The GL directs all aspects of Group operations including staff, facilities and equipment and is directly responsible for maintaining a safe work environment and instilling a strong safety culture. The IS Group is a world leader in providing and quantify the effects of radiation on systems and materials. The IS Group expertise is diverse, with approximately 30 staff including administrators, specialists, project coordinators, scientists, and engineers. The IS Group maintains competencies in dosimetry testing, radiation detector system testing/calibration, materials testing, materials irradiation and metrology, as well as instrument research and testing. The group consists of multiple teams of up to 12 staff led by Team Leads that reports to the GL. The technical disciplines represented within the Group include material science, nuclear engineering, health physics, and mechanical engineering. **Responsibilities** The GL is expected to be a technical expert in at least one of the technical fields represented in the group. The GL will be responsible for retaining, recruiting, developing, mentoring and managing a diverse staff base that has a national and international reputation. The GL will also be responsible for ensuring the Laboratory's high-quality standards and on-time delivery expectations are met.? Principle responsibilities include: + Manage assigned resources to ensure optimal utilization of staff, equipment, and facilities. + Ensure quality of product/services are delivered by providing appropriately trained and motivated staff to projects. + Work with Division Directors, Sector Managers (SMs), and Product Management Office Directors (PMODs) to identify future resource requirements. + Support the SMs in the development of new business opportunities for the group. + Market group capabilities within the Laboratory and support Sector Managers in external marketing. + As necessary, assist PMODs and SMs in identification and selection of project managers. + Network with other GLs, Project Manager Office Directors, and staff from PNNL, industry and academia to discover and fulfill capability requirements. + Cultivate staff success through advancement of a supportive work environment where all staff are valued and respected. + Foster a feedback-rich environment; actively understanding and resolving barriers that impede staff and accomplishment of work; and foster active two-way communications that informs and impacts organizational decisions. + Ensure staff contributions are appropriately recognized and rewarded. + Evaluate and provide meaningful high quality performance feedback to staff members to optimize their organizational contributions and support long-term professional/personal development goals. + Support professional development of staff by offering opportunities to enhance their capabilities and expertise. + Ensure safe, secure, effective, and compliant operations. + Take action to mitigate hazards associated with work conducted by assigned staff. **Qualifications** Minimum Qualifications: + BS/BA and 10 years work experience -OR- + MS/MA or higher and 8 years of experience Preferred Qualifications: + An advanced degree in Material Science, Engineering, or related discipline, is preferred, with progressively responsible leadership experience and/or experience managing complex assignments. + Demonstrated ability to lead staff in the conduct of nuclear research operations. + Successful performance as a senior scientist, engineer and/or project manager including sponsor relationship management. + Strong interpersonal communications, oral and written, and problem solving. **Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment** Not applicable. **Additional Information** This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.
