About the Job
Global Communities (GC) Healthy Start program works to eliminate disparities in birth outcomes, through increasing access to support during pregnancy and postpartum with a focus on Black and immigrant communities. GC’s Healthy Start San Diego seeks a community-based liaison to participate in the language appropriate delivery of Healthy Start services for Afghan families. Settings may include community events, Zoom meetings, and client home visits scheduled in conjunction with GC staff. The ideal candidate will be a native speaker of Dari and/or Pashto and have personal experience with pregnancy, childbirth, or parenthood. An interest in public health, child development, and/or social work is beneficial. Must be located in San Diego County.
Responsibilities:- Provide verbal translation support in Dari and Pashto for GC staff
- Translation may be in person or remote, with the presence of the assigned GC employee
- Participate in the development of written materials in Dari and/or Pashto as needed
- Invoice Global Communities on a monthly basis for services rendered.
Deliverables
- Provide translation services to Dari and Pashto speaking clients and community members at visits and outreach events scheduled in conjunction with Global Communities staff. Translation must be accurate, culturally sensitive, confidential, non-discriminatory, and always done in a professional manner.
- Development of culturally and language appropriate health education materials.
- Invoice Global Communities monthly for services rendered.

- ACCURACY:
Community-based liaisons will not omit or add details to the words of the client when supporting translation. Interpreters/Translators will not share their opinions or give advice to clients. - CULTURAL SENSITIVITY:
Community-based liaisons will be culturally competent, sensitive, and respectful of the individual(s) they serve. - CONFIDENTIALITY:
Community-based liaisons must participate in a HIPAA training. They may not share any information obtained through their assignments with other people outside of the translation service, including but not limited to information gained through access to documents or other written materials. - COMPENSATION:
GC will compensate Community-based liaisons for their time. Community-based liaisons will not accept additional money, considerations, or favors directly from clients. Community-based liaisons will not use for private, or others gain or advantage any provider’s time, facilities, equipment, or supplies, nor will they use or attempt to use their position to secure privileges or exemptions. - NON-DISCRIMINATION:
Community-based liaisons will always be neutral, impartial and unbiased. Community-based liaisons shall not discriminate on the basis of gender, disability, race, color, national origin, age, socioeconomic or educational status, or religious, political, or sexual orientation. If an Community-based liaison is unable to ethically perform in a given situation, the Community-based liaison must refuse the assignment, without any threat or retaliation in response to this action. - PROFESSIONAL DEMEANOR:
Community-based liaisons will be punctual, prepared, and dressed in a manner appropriate and not distracting for the situation. - SCOPE OF PRACTICE:
Community-based liaisons must not counsel, refer, give advice, or express personal opinions to individuals for whom they are interpreting/translating, or engage in any other activities, which may be construed to constitute a service other than interpreting/translating. Community-based liaisons are prohibited from having unsupervised access to clients.
- Fluency in Dari, Pashto, and English
- Comfort speaking about healthy pregnancies, childbirth, breastfeeding, and infant care
- Interest in public health, child development, social work
- Ability to attend occasional in-person events in San Diego County.
