Under the direction of the Nurse Manager is responsible for performing hearing screenings on all newborns, creating an individual account in the Dept of Public Health (DPH) Maven database, entering results of critical congenital heart defect screening, hearing screens, birth defects and newborn screening (PKU/cystic fibrosis) into both the Maven database and Epic electronic health record, as well as maintaining an appropriate quantity of supplies related to the newborn screening program. Also responsible for communicating results to new parents. Other related duties may be assigned.

- 1. Performs hearing screenings on all newborns in both the well-newborn nursery and newborn intensive care unit
- 2. Accurately enters results of all critical congenital heart defect screening, hearing screening, birth defects and newborn screening testing (cystic fibrosis/PKU) into the Maven database and Epic electronic health record
- 3. Packages all samples of PKU and cystic fibrosis for delivery via courier to DPH and Yale Lab
- 4. Initiates an outside audiology consult if infant fails ABR hearing screening x2 and communicates this to new parents
- 5. Maintains established par levels of supplies and equipment as needed for newborn screening.
- 5.1 Orders internal supplies according to departmental schedule as evidenced by feedback from staff and supervisory observation.
- 6. Maintains accurate, timely and courteous communications.
- 6.1 Answers telephone ina courteous and prompt manner as observed by RN, physicians, and feedback.
- 7. Maintains logs and statistical reports as required by specific unit.
- 7.1 Updates appropriate logs as observed by supervisor.
- 8. Demonstrates development in his/her daily activity.
- 8.1 Participates in nursing staff meetings a minimum of 8 times per year as observed by supervisor.
- 9. Coordinates patient flow and related activities.
- 9.1 Properly indicates that all hearing tests were completed.
- 10. Performs clerical /secretarial duties as required.
- 10.1 All hearing results are reported to the State.
- 11. Performs similar or related duties as required or directed.
- 11.1 Works with the Birth Certificate Registrar in collecting information for the birth certificates and transmits information to the State.
- 12. Completes non-therapeutic functions under the direction of MD, PA, APRN or RN.
- 12.1 Remove medication(s) from the pneumatic tube system sent from the Pharmacy or Hospital Supply to the unit/patient care area.
- 13. Creates a new individualized record in the DPH Maven database for each newborn
EDUCATION
A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent is required. An Associate's Degree is preferred.
EXPERIENCE
1-3 years experience preferred in a patient facing role.

SPECIAL SKILLS
Good interpersonal and communication skills are required. Attention to detail and ability to multitask essential.Accurate data entry and advanced computer skills required to maintain both the DPH database and Epic EHR.Successful completion of orientation.
PHYSICAL DEMAND
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. They are also required to stand and walk. They must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities require include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
