What You Will Do
The Power Systems Programs and Integration Office (STEP-PSPI) is looking for an R&D Engineer 4 to support LANL's Heat Source Design Agency. LANL is responsible for manufacturing Pu-238 heat sources used in radioisotope power systems for space exploration and national security missions. The Design Agency is responsible for the heat source design and definition to ensure the products meet all quality and flight safety requirements. STEP-PSPI provides program management and is responsible for integrating the Pu-238 programs at LANL.
R&D Engineer 4
The successful candidate will be a part of the Design Agency team responsible for owning, reviewing, updating, and maintaining product design definitions, drawings, and specifications. They will participate in reviewing any nonconformances, procedure updates and engineering process changes/updates for potential impacts to product design requirements. The candidate will be required to work well in a small team environment yet interact frequently with stakeholders such as the Production Agency and Quality organizations.
In addition to the duties outlined above, the R&D Engineer 4 will manage design activities for new or modified products. They will also lead long-range planning efforts, serve as a liaison with external customers and associated Laboratories, and serve as a technical expert for internal/external reviews and assessments.

Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, ยง712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated experience working with Design and Production Agencies and/or Product Realization Teams.
- Familiarity with the Heat Source or other space programs.
- Demonstrated experience working with quality and process engineers to meet design requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to apply and interpret specialized, state-of-the-art engineering and scientific principles, techniques, methods and tools.
- Demonstrated knowledge of conduct of operations and conduct of engineering in a nuclear facility.
- Experience with participating in or performing assessments and reviews of products, procedures, processes, and/or nonconformances.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated record of excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Leading the development of strategic program development and execution plans, with subsequent successful implementation
- Integrating broad scientific/technical/engineering knowledge across disciplines to provide solutions for an extensive and diverse range of complex and/or ambiguous problems where analysis requires in-depth evaluation of intangibles
- Successfully working productively with external customers and agencies
- Leading assessments or reviews
Desired Skills:
- Advanced knowledge of and experience with Heat Source program and manufacturing processes.
- Experience working in PF-4 or equivalent nuclear facility.
- Knowledge of and experience with Defense Programs Business Process System (DPBPS) requirements.
- Knowledge of and experience with DOE O 414.1, NQA-1, and/or SD330 quality requirement implementation.
