The Heavy Equipment Mechanic (HEM) is responsible for the diagnostic and repairs of military/civilian light, medium and heavy wheeled equipment. Works within a team of other mechanics. Troubleshoots malfunctions, and repair, rebuild and maintain heavy equipment. Operate and inspect machines or equipment to diagnose defects, dismantle and reassemble equipment, using hoists and hand tools, examine parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges, replace defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions, and test overhauled equipment to insure operating efficiency. The period of performance for this position is not to exceed more than one year, may extend to fulfil mission requirements.
Responsibilities
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
+ Performs scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on wheeled vehicles and trailers equipment.
+ Inspects, tests, and operates wheeled equipment (commercial and military) to determine equipment serviceability and proper operation.
+ Services equipment with fuel, oil, water, coolant, hydraulic fluid, refrigerant, and compressed air, disassembles and assembles malfunctioning accessories and components.
+ Removes, disassembles, repairs, cleans, treats for corrosion, assembles, and reinstall components and accessories.
+ Disposes of hazardous materials and waste in accordance with all state, local, and federal environmental standards and regulations.
+ Operates, cleans, inspects, and services wheeled equipment for maintenance purposes.
+ Practices good housekeeping, property accountability control, Foreign Object Damage prevention and safety at all times.
+ Additional responsibilities include working with a variety of repair and test equipment including welders, torches, pressure testers, electrical testers and various other test equipment.
+ Performs other duties as assigned to meet organizational/operational objectives.
+ Job duties and responsibilities may change due to contractual requirements.
+ The Heavy Equipment Mechanic receives guidance and direction as necessary from the Maintenance supervisor and/or Maintenance Lead with regards on policies, directives and professional development.
MATERIAL & EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED:
+ Extensive use of basic shop equipment, diagnostic equipment, hand tools, power tools, air tools, and lifting devices.
+ Steel Toe shoes are required.
+ Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required in certain areas while work is being conducted. Such PPE includes, but is not limited to:Face Mask, head, foot, hand, vision and hearing protective devices.
+ Periodic use of computer systems and multi-function devices (MFD).
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
+ Work is generally conducted in a shop environment. However, duties may involve the conduct of work in the outdoors area with a potential exposure to extreme climatic condition.
+ Work requires stooping, climbing, prolonged standing, prolong sitting and occasional working in cramped and awkward position.
+ Frequent exposure to conditions of inclement weather, extreme heat and cold, high/low humidity, blowing sand and dust, and working in confined spaces and at heights.
+ Function in conditions of inclement weather, extreme heat and cold, high/low humidity, blowing sand and dust, and working in confined spaces and at heights.
+ The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions. One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin: fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.
+ A normal work week is 40 hours (5 days a week).
+ Must be willing to work additional hours when mission requires.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
+ Must be able to climb up and down ladders and stairs, as well as bend, twist, and squad for prolonged periods.
+ Must be able to pull, push and lift up to 50 pounds.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
+ High School Diploma or equivalent. One-year related experience may be substituted for one year of education, if degree is required.
+ Must possess a valid State Driver’s License.
+ It is preferred the applicant to furnish their own serviceable, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) compliant, tools, that are appropriate for their required duties.
+ Must be a U.S. citizen.
+ Must be able to obtain and maintain a Tier 1 level clearance.
SKILLS and EXPERIENCE:
+ Three (3) to six (6) years of experience in wheeled equipment maintenance or equivalent.
+ Must be proficient in servicing, troubleshooting and repairing military and civilian wheeled equipment.
+ Must be familiar with the use of electronic technical manuals.
+ Engineering equipment preferred but not mandatory.
+ Customer Service skills preferred.
+ Must be able to operate electronic devices to input hours worked on timecards and complete assigned company training.
