JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for operating heavy equipment in support of county landfill operations.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Operates and maintains heavy equipment for the purpose of transferring, loading and unloading, spreading, compacting, and covering waste at county landfill sites.
- Operates a variety of equipment, including bulldozer, compactor, track-hoe, front-end loader, dump truck, and skid steer.
- Maintains landfill by placing erosion mats, performing litter control, and performing hydro-seeding operations.
- Operates a bulldozer to control the location of waste, create and maintain access points, maintain slops, clear land, stockpiling dirt, and constructing roads.
- Operates a compactor to compact waste at the landfill site.
- Operates a track-hoe and front-end loader to move a variety of materials and to expose hazards within the landfill.
- Operates an off-road dump truck to transport materials.
- Operates a skid steer and zero-turn mower to mow grass, sweep and clean roads, and load and unload materials.
- Disassembles and reassembles scales in preparation for quarterly scale calibration.
- Maintains the pit pump and surveys for leachate control.
- Sorts and places tires and metals for recycling.
- Performs routine maintenance and repairs on assigned equipment.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
- Performs other work as required or when directed by administration.
- In the event of an emergency, all Camden County employees are considered essential and may be required to perform alternate duties.

- Knowledge of the principles and practices of landfill operation.
- Knowledge of heavy equipment operation and maintenance principles.
- Skill in the operation of landfill equipment.
- Skill in providing customer services.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Landfill Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include EPD regulations, safety guidelines, and county and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of related equipment operation duties. Inclement weather conditions contribute to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to operate heavy equipment in support of county landfill operations. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of those operations.

- Contacts are typically with co-workers, vendors, waste haulers, and the general public.
- Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee frequently lifts heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must distinguish between shades of color.
- The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, and grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggle, or gloves.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain State of Georgia certification as a Certified Landfill Operator.
