Highway Maintenance Worker
Under immediate supervision. Responsible for operating vehicles from pick-up trucks, to and including tractor trailer vehicles used for hauling heavy equipment. Requires occasional heavy lifting, performs all tasks pertaining to maintaining and repairing the County Roads and Bridges system. Requires ability to stand for prolonged periods of time when flagging, patching, trimming, etc.
- Cleans culverts, digs trenches, shovels various materials to include carrion.
- Spreads patching materials from the back of dump trucks (requires lifting and turning with weight in excess of 40lb), Fills and operates crack filling machines (requires lifting blocks weighing 50lb each to height of 4ft. Manually handles the placement of Rip Rap in ditch areas which may be in excess of 50 lb. each.
- Cuts grass, trims weeds, brush, and trees both manually and with chain saws.
- Handles concrete, rock, asphalt and associated saws, compactors, grinders, consolidators, for patching and repairs, which results in heavy lifting and turning.
- Picks up trash from County Right of Way and keeps Maintenance Facility Yard, buildings and trucks and/or equipment used cleared of trash and debris.
- Operates snow removal trucks equipped with snowplows and salt spreaders, may be required to work 16 hr. shifts for prolonged periods as needed during snow removal operations, at which time employee will be alone in the truck.
Position Requirements/Training and Experience: High School education or equivalent. Must have the Class A Commercial Driver’s License requirements with the following endorsements: Core knowledge, air brakes and combination vehicle, as specified in Section 391.35 of Federal Motor Carrier Regulations. Must have or receive a Flagger Certification within two months of hire.
Post-Offer Physical (Subpart E Physical Qualifications and Examinations) Section 391-41 through 391.49 and Alcohol tests (Subpart C-Tests Required) Section 382.301 and Drug Tests (Subpart H-Controlled Substance Testing) Section 391.81 through 391.123 will be administered as prescribed by Federal Motor Carrier Regulations.
This position is subject to Union representation per contract and employee is to perform all duties covered by the contract except those of the traffic sign maintainer, operator and operator mechanic classification.
The starting salary for this position is $24.6659 per hour, $51,305.12 per year. After successful completion of a one-year probation the salary will be raised to that of a Highway Maintainer in the Union Contract.
