About the Job
The Histology Technician is responsible for the histology department's daily duties and overall operation. The technician evaluates, assists, and performs the functions required by the pathologist to obtain optimum samples for pathology analysis. This requires knowledge of the operation of equipment used in the department. The technician also accessiones specimens, cuts paraffin tissue blocks, stains, and coverslips, and files reports and/or slides.
Duties/Responsibilities:
• Identifies and labels pathology and cytology samples.
• Embeds specimens into blocks and fixes tissue in formalin.
• Operates instrumentation for impregnation with paraffin, cutting tissue sections, and staining of slides.
• Submits stained slides to the pathologist for review.
• Assists physicians/pathologists with bone marrow aspirations, processes, and stains as appropriate for the pathologist's review.
• Monitors and maintains equipment and supplies in Histology and Surgery (Frozen Section Suite).
• Assists with slide and report filing and other clerical duties.
• Maintains eyewash stations/ showers in the lab\ and frozen section suite.
• Participates in educational activities to maintain laboratory, cytology, and histology procedures competency.
• Participates in quality management activities to maintain excellence in laboratory/histology/cytology test procedures and customer service.
• Maintains a safe work environment by following laboratory/pathology/cytology safety, infection control, and dress code policies, procedures, and protocols.
• Responds to hospital and laboratory-related problems professionally to assist other medical professionals with emergency patient care as defined in disaster plan protocols, as needed for emergency patient care, and as warranted by laboratory staffing.
Education:
High school graduate or equivalent is required. Background in science preferred
Experience:
Laboratory experience is required
Licensure/Certification:
the HT (Histotechnician) Certification, or the HTL (Histotechnologist) Certification is preferred
