Position Summary
The Histology Supervisor maintains competence in every aspect of Histology and acts in place of the section manager when necessary. The position is responsible for the daily overall supervision and operation of the Histology Laboratory.
As the Histology Supervisor, you will:
- Be responsible for the overall operation and organization of the Histology Laboratory and acts in place of the Section Manager as needed including attendance and participation in regularly scheduled supervisory meetings.
- Supervise and evaluate personnel, assigns duties to staff as appropriate, enforces hospital and departmental policies including the presentation of in-services as necessary, aids in staff selection, orientation and training.
- Responsible for the competency assessment of Histology Employees, assist in the development and training of employees, perform employee evaluations, and encourage continuing education in Histology.
- Supplement the technical staff at the bench when appropriate. Assist with gross dissection, embedding, cutting, preparation of special stains, immunohistochemistry, in-situ hybridization, immunofluorescence and other specialized processes as necessary.
- Responsible for the maintenance and routine evaluation of technical quality and stain quality for all of Histology to include routine H&E, special stains, IHCs, -ish, IFs and other specialized stains.
- Responsible for maintaining appropriate patient safety measures through all histological processes to include the gross room. Monitor the safe working environment of the histology laboratory, acts as the Histology representative to the safety committee and refers suggestions and observations to the safety committee.
- Monitor the quality of service in Histology and participates in departmental QA processes. Maintain lab compliance with JCAHO, CAP and federal regulations. Participate in the lab CQI program and compiles CQI data for Histology. Responsible for oversight of the preparation, maintenance of slides and required documentation for the CAP Inter-laboratory Comparison program proficiency testing and surveys. Remain current with new processes and quality improvement procedures necessary in Histology. Maintains and updates procedures as necessary.
- Ensure hospital resources are used efficiently and effectively including human resources. Monitor and schedule staff. Monitor the triage of employees on breaks and meal periods. Maintain time and attendance records as appropriate.
- Maintain effective communication with Pathologists, PAs, Section Manager and Administrator as necessary. Notifies the section manager, administrator and pathologists of unusual problems as appropriate.
- Responsible for oversight and maintenance of all equipment to include documentation and validations as necessary.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- High School graduate or equivalent or higher degree with at least 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of academic credit of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both disciplines)
- 5 years of experience in Histology is required
Preferred
- Bachelor's degree
- HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) required, QIHC recommended
Other Information
- 40 hours a week
- Monday - Friday (primarily days)
- Required to work rotating On-Calls for weekends and holidays
