About the Job
Overview:
This individual will be responsible for preparing and staining tissue specimens among other tests and applications of histology for microscopic examination and diagnosis by a Pathologist in compliance with applicable regulations.
Position Details:
- Schedule: Monday to Friday 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM (some schedule flexibility available following training)
- Compensation: $28-31/hr

- Completes routine tissue trimming, processing, embedding, sectioning, and slide staining.
- Operates and maintains general laboratory equipment.
- Maintains a safe, clean, work environment.
- Prepares, handles, and disposes of laboratory solutions and reagents.
- Troubleshoots equipment and process issues.
- Maintains study and department records using good documentation practices.
- Consistently follows instructions/SOPs and minimizes rework.
- Collaborates with the Pathology and Necropsy Teams
- Assists in training new staff.
- Assists in planning of laboratory work schedule to meet study on time delivery and expected turnaround times.
- Participates in data review.
- Assists in document review and the updating of SOPs and forms.
- Stains slides with special stains as requested.
- Orders and maintains an adequate amount of supplies.
- Works on routine assignments per written procedures, where ability to recognize deviation from accepted practice is required.
- Normally receives minimal instructions on routine work and detailed instructions on new assignments.
- Work under close supervision from supervisor or senior personnel.
- Ability to work in a team environment and independently as required.
- May be required to work Holidays and weekends.
- May be required to work overtime.
- May assist with process and equipment qualifications and validations.
- May have interaction with clients and/or auditors.
- Contributes to the overall operations and to the achievement of departmental goals.
- Thorough understanding of Good Laboratory Practices and Good Manufacturing Practices.
- Other duties as assigned.

Experience / Education
- Minimum 1 year of experience
- Associates Degree or equivalent
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
- Demonstrate consistent productivity and meet deadlines
- Ability to consistently follow instructions/ Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Proficient in Oral & Written communication skills
- Need to be able to read, write and understand English
- Proficient in Microsoft (Excel, Word, Outlook)
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to work in a Lab setting with exposure to animals/biohazards/chemicals, particularly formalin and xylene
- Must be able to wear appropriate PPE: routinely gloves, lab coat, and safety glasses or goggles
- Must be able to work in environment with variable noise levels
- Ability to sit and stand for long periods of time
- Clarity of vision
- Ability to identify and distinguish colors – As evidenced by passing a color blind screening test
- Must be able to perform activities with repetitive motions
- Ability to lift 50 lbs occasionally
- Ability to crouch, bend, twist and reach
- Ability to push/pull 50 lbs occasionally
- Ability to work in variable temperatures high to freezing
- Inside working conditions
- Must not have animal allergies to applicable species in this facility
