Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Meets all responsibility requirements established by the Supervisor, Laboratory Services.
- Responsible for the preparation of tissue specimens for microscopic evaluations by the pathologist, including surgical, research and outside cases.
- Assumes responsibility for quality of tissue slides, following technical and quality control procedures.
- Maybe responsible for all aspects of grossing.
- Performs routine and special grossing procedures on body tissues to provide information for diagnosing, processes such specimens according to good practices of clinical laboratory science.
- Performs aspects of grossing including qualitative and quantitative procedures utilizing established methods such as specimen processing.
Proficient and is highlyable toexecute and maintain procedures in microtomy (sectioning) portion of histology. Emphasis on minimizing the risk of mislabeling specimens and cross contamination and willproduce high quality slides and throughput on a consistent basis.
- Ability to manually embed small and large specimens in a precise and detailed manner. Emphasis on cross contamination and proper orientation that willproduce high quality and throughput on a consistent basis.
- Maintains work area equipment supplies.
- Performs special techniques including special stains and Immunohistochemistry.
- Monitors compliance with safety regulations.
- Supports the facility's ideology, mission, goals and objectives.
- Performs in accordance with the laboratory's policies and procedures.
- Follows the laboratory's standards for ethical business conduct.
- Conducts self as a positive role model and team member.
- Participates in laboratory committees, meetings, in-services and activities as applicable.
- Performs according to established compliance policies and procedures.
- Performs according to established Quality Management policies and procedures.
- Complies with safety policies and procedures in the performance of job duties and responsibilities.
- Maintains responsibility for a safe work environment by documenting and reporting any observed or suspected safety violations, hazards and policy/procedure noncompliance.

- Ability to maintain a professional demeanor at all times.
- Bachelor's degree in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution OR
- Associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution OR
- Education and experience equivalent to an associate degree in science, including at least 60 semester hours from an accredited institution with a minimum of:
- 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses OR
- 24 semester hours of science courses, including 6 hours in chemistry and 6 hours in biology.
- Registered as a Histology Technician HT (ASCP) or willingness to sit for the exam (preferred but not required).
- Microtomy cutting experience required.
