JOB DESCRIPTION
The Hockey Communications Specialist will take ownership of tracking all statistical and historical records, producing written content for media use (game notes, stats packages, postgame notes, line charts), credential fulfillment, press box management, and news clippings. The incumbent is responsible for supervising the game night associates, serve as a liaison with the event manager at Crypto.com Arena, and be a point of contact with visiting teams and the NHL off-ice officials to oversee their needs. In addition to working all home games and supporting the department with press releases and other assignments, this person will have some opportunity to represent the LA Kings at select road games and events as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Serves as statistician and historian for tracking all team records and player information after every game to ensure accurate stats are noted
- ResponsibleforcreatingallGame NotesandgatheringappropriateapprovalsfordistributionandentryintotheNHL Game Notes System
- Works with NHL on in-game inquiries and request for stat and fact check within the league in order to deliver accurate information to broadcasters, coaches, reporters and other media. Is liaison for league resources including media.nhl.com;[email protected];[email protected]
- Responsible for the updates and content for the new season’s media guide. Reviews facts, player bios, and cross references, internal and external, historical records that have been tracked throughout the previous seasons. Additionally, ensures the layout and basic art/design is properly placed and adjusted to deliver an aesthetically pleasing media guide using InDesign and Photoshop tools
- Handles daily PR-group email with notable news, details, twitter facts etc. to align with hockey leadership’s goals and vision to market appropriate content to the media. Works closely with the Director Hockey Communications and the LA Kings Marketing team to share appropriate news on @LAKingsPR
- Hire, supervise, schedule and train game night associates
- Creates and distributes line charts before games, using InDesign, to the appropriate Hockey Leaders and media
- Supports the Director Hockey Communications and Manager Hockey Communications with all written materials (news releases, and information for distribution)
- Helps track and communicate LA Kings mentions within the media via Meltwater (periodically) and SportScan (daily) in order to deliver routine updates and advanced clips to executives
- Serves as PR liaison with visiting teams’ PR contact, broadcasters and team operations staff and supports their needs at Crypto.com Arena on game days, such as but not limited to credentials, parking, Wi-Fi etc.
- Partners with the business communications department to manage and maintain media email distribution lists to certify the LA Kings are disseminating information to all appropriate media.
Media Services and Communications:
- Responsible for media credential fulfillment to ensure appropriate media partners are accessing our home games
- Produce and disseminate relevant statistical information and audio files of player/coach interviews after games to media, along with the upcoming team schedule (practice and media availability), marketing initiatives and promotional information
- Oversees the maintenance of the press box to deliver a clean, organized and catered spaced to our media partners, broadcasters and TV crews
- Special projects and other administrative support as assigned across all departments. Additionally, occasionally support uniquely requested PR content creation such as written articles
SPECIFIC JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
The Hockey Communications Specialist possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skill and abilities:
- A solid understanding and hockey knowledge of the LA Kings and the NHL
- Fluent and capable with InDesign, Photoshop and PowerPoint in particular
- Well versed with all social media platforms
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability work in a dynamic working environment
- Highly motivated, self-starter with foresight and a desire to succeed
- Confident personality with a natural ability to earn trust
- Keen organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple assignments in different areas of responsibility
- A selfless nature that doesn’t seek the spotlight or credit for work performance instead relying on performance and results
- Ability to work flexible hours and days on a rotating schedule
QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
Education:
- BA/BS Degree (4-year)
Experience:
- A minimum of 2-4 years of related work experience
- Excellent written experience and editing abilities with an education or background in this area, including familiarity with hockey vernacular and an understanding of AP style
- Familiarity and high-level of experience with Microsoft Excel spreadsheets
Pay Scale: $65,000 - $67,000
