The Job: The HVAC Technician is responsible for the overall heating and cooling systems of the Museum.
This is a 40-hour/week, union-represented position (IBEW, AFL-CIO, Local #134) with regular hours and occasional overtime.
Responsibilities:
- Address customer questions and help as it relates to the HVAC systems.
- Thoroughly inspect all the systems to detect defects and malfunctions and make repairs as needed.
- Conduct regular maintenances and service of HVAC systems and maintaining a cycle record; appropriately handle testing tools and equipment.
- Procure spare parts for replacement and filing necessary documentation for the same.
- Follow all standard operating procedures of the Museum.
- Meet deadlines and efficiently completing all tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
- Comply with all safety norms and regulations for repairing of the systems.
- Open valves on equipment such as compressors, pumps, and condensers to prepare system for operation and starts equipment and auxiliary machinery.
- Observes temperature, pressure and ampere readings on log sheet at specified intervals.
- Record temperature, pressure, and ampere readings for system and equipment and adjust controls or overrides automatic controls to obtain specified operation of equipment.
- Connect hose from supply tank to compressor to replace coolant while knowing and understand proper pressure readers from attached gauges.
- Repack pumps and compressors, cleans condensers, and replaces worn or defective parts.
- Conform to federal rules and regulations associated with specific coolants per EPA requirements.
- Other duties as assigned.
- The ability to troubleshoot, restore operation, or repair the roof top HVAC unit when it is not cooling properly. Complete repair and operation within a reasonable amount of time.
- The ability to complete required Preventative Maintenance assignments within required time as per work instruction/order.
- Close out work assignments as scheduled daily.
- Accountable for all daily work time on all work assignments and/or work orders within the computer-based system.
- Ability to account for and document parts used for a repair or replacement on the required work instruction/order.
- Responsible for inventory and reconciling inventory of all HVAC, Chiller, Boiler-related equipment, and materials needed to complete required jobs on a yearly basis.
Qualifications:
- Five (5) years' experience working on large-scale HVAC systems required; a current City of Chicago Stationary Engineers license is a plus.
- High school or GED diploma is required; Associates degree or equivalent degree from a technical school is a plus.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently.
- Tenacity and ability to "think on your feet" in stressful situations.
- Ability to manage a wide variety of projects/demands at one time with quality execution and a timely and safe delivery.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to network with customers.
- Ability to detect technical defects, malfunctions, and other faults.
- Sound understanding of using all types of repair tools.
- Valid driver's license is required.
- Ability to work nights, holidays, and weekends as needed.
- Language:
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and corespondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees of the organization
- Mathematical:
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
- Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Reasoning:
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Physical:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear.
- The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
- The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; or smell.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Work Environment:
- The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock.
- The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; extreme heat; and vibration.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
