About the Job
The Imports Specialist is a key member of the organization, directly supporting Purchasing Management and Imports through a sequence of daily, weekly, and monthly tasks. Over time, the Imports Specialist will have the opportunity to learn and grow within other areas of the department including Imports buying, Purchasing, and Transportation/Logistics. The ideal candidate has traditional food buying experience, preferably within a food distributor, and possesses strong organizational skills along with being a high-energy team player.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Import Coordination

- Aid our Senior Imports Manager with the coordination of freight, brokers and customs agents.
- Learning the end to end Importing process, from utilizing the Demand Reporting to cutting POs to sending those POs to vendors.
- Working with vendors directly, establishing working relationships over time.

- Special Orders and R&D Management (As part of vetting & sourcing new items)
- Manage the flow of Special-Order requests through to appropriate buying members and keep a log of ongoing statuses.
- Learn our new item Research & Development process, in order to serve as a backup to Purchasing Management. Serve as point of contact with disseminating R&D updates, providing weekly R&D updates to sales team.
- Log item requests, coordinate with appropriate buyers and management for approvals.
- Time Permitting: Transportation Coordination:

- Backhauls: Tracking and coordinating backhauls across buying team.
- Arranged Freight: Obtaining quotes from carriers, utilizing the best option from a timing and costing perspective. Consolidating loads where possible.
- Inbound Receiving: Manage our Receiving program, Dock Vue, and work with Warehousing to understand Inbound cases/day, identify bottlenecks, assign which days we can take full trailers and containers and which days or times can be used as overflow/gap work.

EXPERIENCE:
- 2+years’ formal food purchasing experience or food importing experience, preferably with a food distributor.
- Knowledge and use of Microsoft Office Tools.
- Good organizational skills, attention to detail, and accuracy.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Must be able to communicate with personnel at all levels of the organization including ownership.
- Self-starter with the ability to set priorities and multi-task to achieve our organizational goals.
