About the Job
Inpatient Competency Restoration services are designed for individuals with a mental health disorder or a co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorder who have been found incompetent to stand trial and are court-ordered to participate in competency restoration treatment.
An inpatient competency restoration program is designed to:
- Reduce the number of individuals found to be incompetent to stand trial on the state forensic waitlist for competency restoration services
- Increase prompt access to clinically appropriate competency restoration services for individuals determined to be incompetent to stand trial who do not require the level of care offered at the state psychiatric hospitals
ICR Facilitator will be leading the educational and procedural facets of the Inpatient Competency Restoration program.
Standards of Performance:
- Education/Teaching
- ICR Facilitator will teach state-approved curriculum to individuals who have been found incompetent to proceed
- ICR Facilitator will adapt teaching styles and strategies to varying needs of individuals to include visual, auditory, kinesthetic styles.
- ICR Facilitator will thoroughly document each individual’s progress towards restoration, barriers, and adapt training/teaching to overcome identified barriers.
- Case Coordination
- ICR Facilitator will track individual’s clinical progress which includes compliance with education, receive updates across disciplines on progress towards competency restoration, and work collaboratively with treatment team (i.e., RN, Psychiatric, Medical, and Clinical Services teams) to evaluate and document barriers and successes.
- ICR Facilitator will guide ICR individuals through the competency restoration process including ensuring timelines of reporting individual’s competency status to legal system are met.
- ICR Facilitator will coordinate assessments of individual’s competency.
- ICR Facilitator will work with criminal justice and community-based mental health providers to ensure aftercare plans are established prior to discharge from facility.
- Evaluation
- ICR Facilitator will evaluate individual progress towards competency restoration and will document progress thoroughly.
- ICR Facilitator will work across disciplines to identify and report ongoing challenges with patient’s competency status
- Documentation
- ICR Facilitator will document each patient’s ongoing progress towards competency restoration
- ICR Facilitator will ensure that timelines for individual evaluations are recorded and available to treatment team to ensure critical evaluation periods are not missed
- ICR Facilitator will document ongoing communication with the criminal justice system, treatment team, legal services, and community/family supports.
Knowledge/Skills:
- Knowledge of Texas competency restoration procedures and laws as well as competency restoration curriculum and process highly preferred.
- Experience with the implementation of evidence-based curriculum for mental health services, preferably in competency restoration.
- Experience in and knowledge of trauma-informed care, harm reduction and recovery principles and standards of care.
- Ability to adapt teaching styles and strategies to varying needs of individuals; effective oral and written communication skills
- Constructively and efficiently work with other professionals and staff, community representatives, persons with disabilities, and family members.
- Attention to Detail, Organized, Ability to multi-task and prioritize workload to meet deadlines.
- Accurate and thorough with documentation
- Advocate for individuals who find themselves involved with both the mental health and criminal justice system
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment
- Ability to use good judgment and to maintain confidentiality of information.
- Ability to accept direction, adhere to policies and procedures, and communicate effectively with various stakeholders.
Bachelor’s degree in Education, Psychology, Social Work, or similar field required. Master’s Degree Preferred. Licensure Not Required. RN License with experience in psychiatric care may be substituted for Bachelor’s Degree.
Experience
At least three (3) years’ experience working directly with individuals with psychiatric, substance use, or behavioral health needs. Preference given to applicants who have worked in correctional or inpatient psychiatric setting.
History of teaching or training facilitation.
Ability to develop and maintain data, understand and track trends, and facilitate compliance with contractual requirements.
Additional Requirements:
Successful completion of training in BLS and Handle with Care Certification within 30 days of employment, and prior to assisting in restraining procedures.
