Location: Clackamas, OR (Remote).

Virtus Healthcare Staffing is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Inpatient Facility Medical Coder to join our partner medical center in Clackamas, OR. This role requires expertise in assigning accurate diagnosis and procedure codes for various patient records, ensuring proper reimbursement and compliance with coding guidelines.
Responsibilities:
- Accurate Coding: Assign ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and HCPCS/CPT codes to patient health records for Emergency Department (ED), Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC), Hospital Ambulatory Surgical Center (HAS), Observation (OBS), Inpatient (IP), and other facility records.
- Coding Compliance: Adhere to all relevant coding guidelines, including those established by CMS, NCHS, AMA, NCCI, UHDDS, Medicaid (OMAP), and Healthcare.
- Clinical Documentation Review: Proficiently review medical records and translate clinical information into coded data.
- Code Assignment: Identify and assign appropriate codes for diagnoses, procedures, and other services, validating any Computer Assisted Coding (CAC) assignments.
- Data Abstraction: Utilize electronic patient data systems (e.g., EpicCare) to access patient information and abstract relevant clinical data elements.
- Coding Validation: Review and verify the accuracy of diagnostic and therapeutic procedure codes, ensuring compliance with CMS coding rules and guidelines.
- Query Process: Communicate with physicians to obtain clarification for diagnoses and procedures when documentation is unclear or incomplete.
- Quality Assurance: Participate in quality assurance and performance improvement activities, identifying and addressing coding concerns and implementing solutions to reduce errors.
- Continuing Education: Stay current on coding and regulatory changes by attending workshops and reviewing relevant publications.
- Teamwork: Collaborate with the coding team, participate in in-services and meetings, and contribute to the development of organizational procedures.
Qualifications:
- Education: High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
- Experience:
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in coding, with four (4) years of inpatient facility coding.
- OR minimum of four (4) years in a similar coding auditor position with proficiency in inpatient coding.
- Certifications: One of the following:
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) Certificate
- Coding Specialist Certificate
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) Certificate
- Skills:
- Previous experience with EMR systems and intermediate computer skills.
- Advanced knowledge of disease processes, diagnostic and surgical procedures, and coding guidelines.
- Fluent in English with excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong time management, organizational, and analytical skills.
- Ability to manage a significant workload and work efficiently under pressure.
- Adherence to the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by AHIMA.
Additional Information:
- The position requires one (1) week of on-site training or until departmental expectations are met.
- The coding auditor senior spends a minimum of 80% of work time assigning codes to inpatient records.
