The City of Torrance is recruiting for an Instructor I to serve at the Torrance Theatre Company! 

The Department
The Community Services Department offers Torrance residents the unique opportunity to help achieve a sense of purpose, identity, self-worth and improved self-esteem within the specialized areas of Cultural Arts, Library, Parks and Recreation. The Community Services Department is committed to providing quality services, activities, programs and facilities for all those who live, learn, work and play in the City of Torrance. 

The Division
The mission of the Cultural Services Division is to strengthen the City of Torrance as a unique center for cultural programs, the arts and arts education through developing the Torrance Cultural Arts Center as a unified campus for learning and excellence; providing classes, programs, and events that enrich the community through arts training and instruction for all levels of learning; creating new arts experiences and  attracting new audiences; serving the unique needs of artists, connecting their work to the public and developing unique artistic resources of and for this community.

Major programs within the Division include the Torrance Art Museum,  Torrance Theatre Company, Torrance Civic Chorale and hundreds of classes offered in all the arts for all ages and levels of ability at the Cultural Arts Center. The Division also produces the annual Cherry Blossom Cultural Festival in Columbia Park every spring and a Summer Concerts series at The Amphitheater at Wilson Park.  

The Position
Torrance Civic Chorale is a program of the Cultural Service Division of the Torrance Community Services Department and includes the adult chorale program and jazz ensemble. Torrance Civic Chorale has provided the South Bay with exceptional choral music, instruction and cultural enhancements since 1961. With 70+ singers, the Chorale and Torrance Civil Jazz ensemble are sponsored by the Cultural Services Division of the Community Services Department at the City of Torrance.The group’s musical repertoire varies widely from the classics to pop tunes and Broadway musicals to newly composed masterworks. Orchestras, bands, instrumental ensembles, and individual musicians are engaged to perform with the Chorale as needed. 

The Instructor I (Torrance Civic Chorale) assists the conductor in planning, reviewing, and rehearsing music.  This position conducts selected rehearsals and pieces, plays accompaniment at sight for chorale and jazz ensembles, may warm-up choirs, rehearses with professional music staff for performances, transposes music from one key to another, and records tracks for sections in the choirs as needed.

The ideal candidate will have following:

• Advanced piano playing;
• Understanding of music theory, harmony, rhythm, composition, and transposition;
• Knowledge of Popular, jazz and rock, musical theater, and classical music;
• Knowledge of choral vocal techniques;
• Knowledge of proper diction and foreign languages as related to musical pieces;

Hours: This is a recurrent, part-time, non-civil service, as needed position. Hours are flexible but concentrated around advertised Torrance Civic Chorale performances. This position may be expected to work some evenings and weekends.
