Description
The Instrument & Electrical Technician ensures the safe, consistent operation of the site’s control loops and low-voltage electrical distribution. They are a subject matter expert within the Maintenance & Engineering group, often collaborating with Maintenance Technicians, Board Operators, Engineers, and Contractors.
The Instrument & Electrical Technician uses codes, manuals, and industry best practices to develop and execute site-specific maintenance work. This position performs both preventative and reactive work, and often participates in process troubleshooting and new equipment installation.
Key Responsibilities
· Perform field preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and occasional installation of instrumentation and electronic controls in a timely, accurate, and safe manner.
o Calibrate pressure, temperature, flow, level transmitters and switches, as well as various other related instrumentation.
o Troubleshoot I/O wiring circuits of DeltaV distributed control system, generally related to solenoids, I/P transducers, limit switches, motor starters, and transmitters.
o Troubleshoot motor control circuits, including variable frequency drives.
o Assist in the commissioning and acceptance of new installations performed by others.
· Perform field maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and occasional installation of low-voltage (0-600V) systems in a timely, accurate, and safe manner.
o Partner with licensed electrician and other contractors in the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of low-voltage systems.
o Assist in the commissioning and acceptance of new installations performed by others.
· Ensure awareness and safe conduct around medium-voltage (600V – 15kV) distribution.
o Submit findings to supervision for licensed electrician troubleshooting or repair services.
· Document work order and troubleshooting activities in maintenance management system.
o Maintain calibration records in accordance with site policy.
o Review and update maintenance procedures to improve planning and execution of routine work.
o Update drawings and manuals with relevant information.
· Act in accordance with regulations, codes, and site policies to promote a strong safety culture.
o Assist in the isolation and lockout of electrical distribution.
o Identify and report safety issues to supervision and management, correcting issues where possible.
· Work with operations, engineering, supervision, and management to identify and execute on opportunities for improvement.
· Periodically attend off-site training to improve skillset and discover new technologies for implementation.
· Provide training and mentorship to interested employees to improve sitewide knowledge of control technology and electrical distribution.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
· High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
· 5+ years relevant experience in an industrial environment, performing service and troubleshooting on controls systems and low-voltage electrical distribution
o Direct experience troubleshooting with a multimeter
o Direct experience calibrating and troubleshooting 4-20 mA instruments and associated control loops
o Direct experience with three-phase motor and variable frequency drive troubleshooting
o Demonstrated understanding of I/O controllers and interlock logic
- Prior training and demonstrated experience (qualified person) with NEC/NFPA 70E Electrical Safety Standards
- Prior experience with construction and maintenance in an electrically classified area
- Prior arc flash training including PPE selection
- Experience writing, reviewing, and editing maintenance procedures
- Ability to interpret relevant drawings – Single-Line Diagram, Ladder Logic, Motor Schematic, and P&ID
- Ability to work with vendors to deliver specifications and obtain quotes for direct and in-kind replacements.
Prefer:
- Associate degree or certificate in related technical discipline – Engineering Technology, Electrical Construction/Distribution Technology, Instrumentation, Automation, Mechatronics
- Prior experience with DeltaV DCS
- Prior experience with ammeters, oscilloscopes, and loop calibrators
- Prior experience in a PSM covered manufacturing environment
- Prior experience troubleshooting and repairing scales
- Prior experience with Burner Management Systems
