Reporting to the Patient Accounting Supervisor and Manager, this position will be responsible for all insurance follow up from various third party payors. The Insurance Specialist will assist the team in resolving patient accounts in order to get claims paid properly and quickly by working with the insurance company, thus reducing the outstanding accounts receivable for Cayuga Health System.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Daily follow up on unpaid insurance accounts, including but not limited to, rejected/incorrect billings, unpaid/improperly paid claims, and denied claims
- Works all assigned accounts at least once every 15 to 30 days, depending on the balance and/or supervisor directive by contacting the third party payors via website, telephone or mail for claim payment status from assigned ATB
- Researches, identifies and rectifies any special circumstances affecting the resolution of the account
- Ability to identify trends within claim denials to quickly resolve multiple claim issues
- Update patient accounts in system with any action taken, additional information attained and next steps to claim resolution with clear and concise documentation
Required Skills and Experience:
- Education - Minimum of high school diploma/GED with 5 years' revenue cycle experience or
- Associates Degree with 2 years' revenue cycle experience
- Minimum of five (5) years' revenue cycle experience in an institutional setting.
- Medical terminology with working knowledge of ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS codes.
- Experience using Microsoft Office suite including Word and Excel.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Medicare and DDE experience a plus
- State of New York Medicaid experience a plus
Physical Requirements:
- Repetitive use of hands and fingers (i.e. use of computer keyboard). May require use of lifting and carrying light loads (up to 10 pounds). Sitting or standing/walking for long periods of time.
