Who We Are: CAMBA is a community of staff, volunteers, clients, donors, neighbors and partners who work together to build an inclusive New York City, where all children and adults have access to the resources and supports they need to thrive. We take a comprehensive approach by offering more than 180 integrated programs in: Education & Youth Development, Family Support, Job Training & Employment Support Services, Health, Housing, and Legal Services. We reach more than 73,000 individuals and families, including almost 13,000 youth. CAMBA serves a diverse cross section of New Yorkers from new mothers in Brownsville to job seekers in the Rockaways. More than half of our clients are immigrants and refugees from around the globe. The CAMBA Education Center (CEC) offers ESOL classes primarily to individuals who are at least 16 years old, who are not enrolled or not required to be enrolled in the New York City public school system, and who live or work in the Flatbush/East Flatbush communities of Brooklyn, New York. Each year, over 1,000 people from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, and Latin America enroll in our ESOL classes. In general, we provide our English learners with the type of educational, case management, career counseling, and technical services that can help them realize their family, educational, employment, and/or other personal goals.
Position: Intake Specialist/Receptionist
Reports To: Supervisor of Student Affairs
Location: 10 Snyder Avenue (aka 955 Flatbush Avenue) Brooklyn, NY 11226 – 3rd Floor
What The Intake Specialist/Receptionist Does:
- Communicate with/update program representatives about individuals they refer to the CEC for enrollment.
- Inform applicants on the requirements to join the CEC’s programs.
- Identify the service needed by applicants and refer them to other providers if/when necessary.
- Assist applicants in filling out required registration/application forms for CEC programs.
- Review, organize, and keep track of applications received in person or from the Online Registration
- Help enter student enrollment data in appropriate database.
- Organize, maintain, and update waiting lists for the CEC’s programs.
- Contact applicants for orientation and class placement assessment as requested by the Supervisor of Student Affairs.
- Assist the Supervisor of Student Affairs with orientation activities.
- Take and deliver messages when appropriate staff member is unavailable.
- Welcome onsite visitors, determine nature of business, and announce visitors to appropriate personnel.
- Admit individuals to the CEC; pay attention to traffic and activities on the premises.
- Observe and report to a supervisor all irregularities (such as unusual visitor or client behavior or visible unsafe/unlawful conditions) in the intake office or anywhere else at the CEC.
- Employ crisis prevention/intervention and crisis management skills to prevent conflict.
- Assist in ordering, receiving, and maintaining office supplies.
- Maintain the professional appearance of the Intake Office.
- Receive, sort, and route mail and publications.
- Update site bulletin boards as needed.
- Assist with filing, photocopying, and collating.
Minimum Education/Experience Required:
- High School Diploma or a High School Equivalency Diploma (such as the GED).
Other Requirements:
- One year of experience.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Literacy in other Microsoft Office Suite products.
- Bilingual in either French, Haitian Creole, Spanish, Arabic, or Russian. Preferred
Compensation: $20.00 hourly
When salary ranges are listed, the range would represent the low and high end for the applicable position & program. The salary offered would be based on various factors unique to each program and candidate. This includes but is not limited to experience, education, budget and/or program size, internal equity, skills and other factors that may be required for the position and organization.
Status: Part-time (Monday-Thursday 5:30 PM-8:30 PM)
